Traditional Italian fare that's a tasty treat all round, especially in the pizza department where they excel with thin crusts and imaginative toppings. Family-run restaurants like La Bussola remind you of how soul-enriching a good, honest, delicious meal can be. The menu has hardly changed in over 10 years, and for very good reason. This is real pizza, not the greasy kind advertised on television. Dough turns into delectable crispy bases before your eyes, topped with traditional ingredients and a few surprises, like smoked oysters. Pizza isn't the only thing on the menu, with the Barbone family also serving pasta and other traditional Italian dishes in an environment completely free from pretension.

Lived up to recommendation
This family cafe/restaurant with the warm-brick welcome had the perfect ambience and menu for our quick business lunch, but I also had an ulterior motive. I was there on a colleague's recmmendation to inspect the venue for a possible group lunch. The house red was a very acceptable drop with our deliciously stacked pizza, though we could have brought our own wine or bought one of several brands of beer. Drinks hot and cold include tea and coffee, spirits and liqueurs. The cuisine is nutritious and homemade Italian but there's more than pizza and pasta on the menu. Tempt your tastebuds with meat, fish and poultry dishes including grilled quails and king prawn cutlets, all served with salad or vegetables. Prices range from the cheapest veal or chicken schnitzels at $16 to the dearest sauced assorted fish at $21.90. La Bussola sits between Victoria and Albert streets on the 1, 22 and 25 tram routes to and from town, at stop 124 on Lygon Street. Just a few minutes from Carlton, and its theatres and Nova cinema, you're near enough for a cosy supper after a late-late show. As well as an elegant restaurant for formal functions, there's a lightly screened-off bistro corner beyond the front cafe that I decided was just the place for a group to meet and mingle over lunch. Business deal concluded, I farewelled my guest and made a date for 20 on the spot.

Don't Judge the Book by its Cover
La Bussola probably has not been touched since it opened but the pizzas and pastas are wonderful. They're not the pizzas and pastas you would talk about for days and days or use words like "depth of flavour" and all the other wanky words some food critique embellish the reviews they write. This is traditional and simple food at its best. The different pastas always come out cooked just right and the sauces are well flavoured. The pizzas are wonderful. You can order the same pizza over and over but it seems there is no set ingredients for each flavour. Don't get me wrong, each one is great and the basic ingredients are present but sometimes some other ingredients appear and these make the pizza fascinating. The pizza crust is excellent. Good flavoured and nice and crispy with a bit of chewiness.
La Bussola is a great place to dine in and get pizza and pastas and to absorb that Italian family feel.
