Koukla

Koukla is the more casual sister restaurant tacked onto the side of the upmarket Frangos & Frangos. Far from sitting in her sibling's shadow, Koukla shines on her own with much acclaimed breakfasts and crispy thin woodfired pizzas later in the day. Down-home country hospitality in a cosy environment, combined with the best local produce makes Koukla worth a trip to Daylesford on its own.

Excellent food, dreadful service...
This eatery is constantly busy because the food is actually fantastic, well done to the Chef & kitchen staff! The downfall of this eatery is the service, or lack of service. I ate here recently and was seated on the long table against the main window which meant I have to steer my curvy body around five chairs full of patrons to get to the only empty seat left on the table. In this position, I couldn't read the "Specials" Board and politely asked our waiter to tell me what they were. He responded that I would need to get up out of my seat (all over again!) and walk over to them to read them myself as the staff "don't memorise" them. There were 4 specials on the Board, how hard could it be? Surely easier than me trying to squeeze around the patrons to try and read them. I lost interest in the specials and pretty much wanted to leave, I was so disappointed in the waiter's lack of care. I don't think I was being unreasonable as I could not see the board from where they had seated me! Secondly, we were not asked if we wanted to order drinks, so we took advantage of the free water on offer and served ourselves. The food was amazing and the only saving grace of the overall experience. Needless to say, we left no tip and spent around a quarter of what we had intended to spend due to a total lack of service and appreciation. Maybe this place is so successful, they can afford to treat patrons like cattle. I won't be going back unless its to order takeaway.

Great pizzas, location and decor, please improve service!
Went here on a sunny Sunday. It was busy which was a good sign. Decor was also impressive. After waiting inside a while, we took charge ourselves and grabbed the first vacant table we saw. Thankfully an outside one which was lovely. We had to go to the counter to get our own menu, then we had to seek out a waitress to take our orders. Once the food arrived though we were delighted - so tasty - the only thing was that it wasn't hot enough, it had cooled to being warm, which was a shame. Must've been left sitting around by the lax staff. I hope that service improves by second visit though, or else I will probably not return as it spoilt it. Even paying was a hassle and delayed.

The fireplace was very inviting due to the freezing weather outside but unless we wanted to share the large tables with other couples - fireplace seating was unavailable. We were unfortunately placed next to the service area right in front of the door. The restaurant had a cosy Morrocan feel to it and was nice and cheap. The woodfired pizzas were divine and even though the wine I ordered wasn't available they did well at recommending a replacement which was also divine. The overall service was too casual and slow.
