Konoba

This modern restaurant is a trendy addition to Canberra's thriving fine dining scene. Located in the newly built Hotel Realm complex, Konoba fuses traditional and modern Mediterranean cuisines. The menu here is of the minimalist school, featuring Mediterranean chargrilled specialties, and is complemented nicely by a sizeable list of local and imported wines.

Not 5 Star
As we were seated at the chipped and scratched white melamine tables in this so called 5 star establishment, we were greetd by friendly but over efficient wait staff. Four times in the first 4 minutes of being seated we were asked for our order. All this before I had even opened the wine list.

The entrees were of reasonble quality but lacking in quantity for the price. Small portions served up on hugely oversized plated made the dishes appear even smaller than they were.

The rack of lamb main course was the stand-out dish of the evening. The Wagyu beef a bitter disappointment. The beef was tough, sinewy and dry. It was cooked rare as requested but lacked the taste and texture of good 9+ Wagyu beef. When this was left on the plate and commented on to the waitress, she just shrugged, scraped it off the plate, cleared the table and left. No apology, no offer of replacement and no discount for what was the most expensive main course on the menu.

Overall, this restaurant has got a hard road in front of it if it is going to try and compete with other top restaurants in Canberra. Definitely not 5 star!

Nice enough
Nice new establishment.

The food and service was good but not in the great to superlative category. The major drawback with the place that we found was the terrible acoustics, by the time we left our ears were ringing. This criticism isn't restricted to this establishment, it seems to be some modern day interior designer's warped idea of what a decent eatery should be like.
