Kobe Jones

Kobe Jones takes the Japanese food that most of us are now familiar with and puts what they describe as a Californian twist on it. This means playing free and easy with familiar favourites, offering a Western spin on classic sushi rolls and distinctly Japanese flavours. The restaurant space is elegantly restrained, with neutral tones dragging the eye towards the city and water views from its elevated Docklands digs. The slick aesthetics extend to the plate, where bite-sized pieces of sushi neatly recline against minimalist garnishes.

As promised, the West edges in on Japanese classics with such dishes as the lollypop sushi: tuna, snapper, salmon and crab salad with asparagus and smelt roe, rolled in peeled cucumber and pinned with a handy 'lollypop' stick. Another dish that strays from the Japanese pack is the signature 'Number One Special', featuring little balls of crab and avocado, wrapped in snapper fillets and baked with a cream sauce.

Go for the sushi
The sushi dishes are amazing. The mains were average. The view at night is worth going for. The staff was friendly and helpful although it was a bit hard to get their attention at times.

Underwhelmed
We decided to give the vegetarian banquet a go. While the sushi rolls were delightful, they were not what was described on the menu (they put the avocado on the enoki roll instead of the avocado roll). The rest of the meal was fairly average, and we were never served the mushroom medley. The seared hibachi tofu in particular was underwhelming. The meal was completed with the impressive ama ozen dessert platter, which was a fun way to end the meal.

Service on the night was polite and friendly, though very slow. We had to ask multiple times for water, were made to wait quite a while before our order was taken, and there were lengthy waits in between courses.

Although we had a lovely view from our table by the window and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere, we thought the food was average considering the price we paid. The vegetarian banquet would not get our recommendation.

Nice atmosphere
It was a nice quiet atmosphere with great views perfect for my partner and I. We had a table against the window with the best view looking towards the city and a delicious banquet that was timed perfectly so we didn't have to rush and could just sit and enjoy. Will definitely be returning!

Kobe rolls
we rocked up about 6.30pm for dinner w/out a booking and were seated promptly. The staff were attentive and had our order in no time.It happened to be Tuesday evening so it was two for one share platters. We started with the volacano and dragon rolls.Absolutely sublime! We'll be back for them alone. The mains that we had were somewhat of a letdown(of the 4 bbq prawns three were molting). I brought this to the waiter's attention and we were offered a substitute, but it was compensated with the two for special so we declined. The best Californian style sushi I've had outside the States and the Kobe rolls are not to be missed.

Delicious
Bad points first - it was VERY quiet, something that I did not expect for such a beautiful restaurant with stunning views. It was a bit more upmarket than we expected and although our son was tolerated, there were no high chairs, so we didn't feel like he was welcomed. Food though was superb. We had the sushi lollipops and they were a definite standout. Highly recommend Kobe Jones for a fresh and stunning food experience.
