A Thursday night out
My very hungry girlfriend and I arrived at about 7p.m. and were quickly lead to our seats by a very pleasant lady. We d booked ahead so we got a nice window table with views of the water below. The ambience was comfortable and although the restaurant was busy, the noise was down to a placid minimum.
The service was great, yet not very fast. A little too young for my taste, as I like tried and experienced waiters\waitresses who have a passion for the food they serve and as such, are thoroughly versed in all aspects of the menu.
Now to the food. Ahh the food! I've been to a fair few Japanese restos around Sydney, but here was an offering that presented not only fresh well-sourced ingredients and a fiendishly clever presentation, as is a norm with the best, but also a twist of genuinely unique ingenuity; something of a little magic in each dish and this made the experience stand out from all others, in Sydney at least.
What did we eat? Apologies to lovers of meat... we're both "vegequarian" so fish and vegetarian was the horizon.
For Entree: Tuna and Kingfish sashimi. So fresh! I'm a lover of fish and very particular on this point - no disappointment here.
Mixed Vegetable Tempura. Great tasting and the right temperature. The dipping sauce could have done with a little more panache.
Agedashi Tofu. This was the pick of the lot. The flavours and texture were incredible. After all, it's only tofu!
For mains I had the Green tea salmon with the wasabi mash. Green tea with salmon!? I thought...the sauce is delicate yet an amazing compliment to the fish. Overall this dish was my favourite - I savoured magic here.
My lovely companion had the Mushroom Medley Tobanyaki and boy was it delicious. She thoroughly enjoyed it and was nice enough to share a little with me.
Now we're both big dessert fans (Paris I love you) and Kobe Jones have a short yet enticing list of sweets. A little on the unconventional side, yet in this case variance from the norm is eloquently rewarded. I ordered the Kanpai Trifle (strawberry trifle with creme de cassis, lemon and a dash of sugar) and my sweet ordered the Anko (flaming green tea creme brulee). We were both thoroughly surprised and refreshed with their well conceived approach to silencing our after dinner craving for something sweet. Top marks here.
No green tea or further drinks, once that was done, so were we. The bill paying was quick and worry free.
Great night and planning a soon return.
