Receiving rave reviews from foodies all over Melbourne in its first few months of operation, Knead Bakers oozes a personal down-to-earth vibe - right from its name (which refers to the hands-on process of bread and pastry making) to its friendly service.
Pastry chef Angela Morris, who studied the art of boulangeries and patisseries for four years in London, prepares sweet and savoury delights such as Lyonnaise brioche (filled with sugar, cream and berries or spinach and ricotta) on a stove behind the counter right before the eyes of eager customers. All of Morris's breads and pastries are handmade using organic flour. Enjoy some fresh raw muesli (made on site) or some gluten-free fig and walnut toast at one of the outdoor tables.
The small cafe space is generally packed for lunch by 11am with counter service so busy you can scarcely find room to browse the menu. A tempting display case houses pies, pasties, brownies, raspberry shortcake, Danish pastries, rustic rye rolls and olive and rosemary loaf laden with kalamata olives, perfect for dipping in parmesan oil.

Superlative
I'm almost tempted not to post a review because I don't want half of Melbourne crowding out this place. But, I think I have found my new breakfast spot.
The bread and cakes here are just delicious. They use all organic flour, low salt and you can taste the yeast in the breads. They're like the loaves I used to make with nutty, country mill stone-ground flour.
The staff are down to earth and friendly, and the atmosphere is surprisingly calm and quiet considering it's a bustling bakery.
I just can't recommend it highly enough!

Not as good as I hoped
Being wheat-intolerant and allergic to dairy, I'm always on the look out for a cafe which can accommodate my dietary needs.
The range of gluten-free products was rather small, offering only 3 gluten-free mini-cupcake sized desserts which were unfortunately priced quite dearly. The gluten-free fig and walnut loaf (mentioned in the description) was nowhere to be found. Gluten-free bread comes in two types of sour-dough: with seeds and without.
The soy latte I order was rather unpleasant as was the dairy latte my partner order.
Positive points about the place is that the atmosphere is inviting. The gluten treats are delicious and the staff are very friendly.
