Sydney restaurateur Kingsley Smith may not be overly concerned with apostrophes or the diminishing status of the surf 'n' turf concept, but steak is something he takes very seriously. With its tobacco tones, bare timber tabletops and leather-clad booths, Kingsleys is a veritable mecca of masculinity, so it's no surprise that it's also a lunchtime favourite among Brisbane's CBD suits. Carved into the belly of brooding Riparian Plaza, with a first-class view of the CityCats and the poor sods who've paid to climb our iconic bridge, there are few vistas that capture the Brisbane riverscape more idyllically.
The theme is upmarket steakhouse and by "upmarket" I mean "bring your platinum Amex"; the beef they're serving is top quality and the rent here can't be cheap. Connoisseurs of cow will know that wagyu striploin is never a bargain and, while there are more affordable options available, once you add some (very good) chips or salad to your order, there won't be much change from a fifty. As you'd expect in a "crabhouse", they also promote crustaceans of various size and origin; Singapore chilli mud crab is a perennial favourite, and if the idea that someone probably died to catch your dinner appeals, the Alaskan king crab, served simply with mayonnaise, is hard to pass up.
The wine list is sizeable and varied, although unsurprisingly biased toward Australian shiraz, and pricing is consistent with the river-view expectations.
