Kent Hotel

Bitten by the renovation bug, what was once an old workers' pub now caters to the smart young professional crowd. If you can, stake your claim on one of the pavement tables, and spend a lazy afternoon overlooking the park.

Disappointed with Kent
Having been to the Kent on many occasions....I have always been happy with the food and the service.

Top notch.

However, just this once, it failed....and failed it did.

Being vego there is always something delicious to eat.

I tried the Chefs Plate, specifically requesting, half the contents to be vegetarian.

Alas, there was only one thing on the platter that was vegetarian.

Generally places of this calibre rarely get it wrong.

Perhaps the waitress had it out for me, perhaps calamari and chicken are not meat....perhaps being a vego has lost its mojo....I don't know.

Normally I am cool about these things but I was accompanied by an overseas food critique of some standing from South East Asia who freelances for a number of upmarket travel publications.

Unfortunately, this time, The Kent misses out.

A relaxing lunch
We (3 of us) arrived unannounced for lunch.... it didn't matter as we were the only ones in the restaurant (as distinct from the bistro)for a while.
Water was brought to the table within a few minutes of arriving. However it took a little longer before we were asked if we'd like some other beverages...and little longer to order. I asked the waiter about the Landsborough Shiraz, and it was great that we were informed about how they came to offer an relatively unknown , red from the Victorian Pyranees area.
I really enjoyed the twice cooked duck, with bok choy and there were no complaints from my son and wife who both ordered the char grilled lamb.
Ther was just enough room left for us to enjoy a sweet each, apple/rhubarb crumble, chocolate nemasis, and for me , a delightful Tira Misu.

All up it was a pleasant afternoon, albeit a little slow on the service for removing our "finished" dishes, but then I'm rather pedantic when it comes to things like that.
It was nice that we had linen serviettes, and not paper "towels".

It was rather surprising however that. although we had been there an hour or so, before another couple arrived(at a table for 2) , they decided to take the table next to us ( the rest of the restaurant being vacant) and not long after another 3 or 4 people arrived and joined them to conduct a (loud mobile phone interupted ) business discussion.
One would have thought that initially they would have been directed to a table somewhat further away from us. To me that was rather strange , and somewhat disappointing.

Well overall, we'd be happy to return, as the ambience and the relaxed view over the park opposite is quite relaxing, and as we all agreed the food & wine , for the cost , was quite reasonable....around $ 60 / head all inclusive.

Consistant quality
Have only recently discovered the Kent.
I have dined there twice and found on both occasions the meals and service to be of a very good standard.
The atmosphere is very pleasant, the staff are courteous and friendly.
Will definately dine there again

Lovely Food, not so lovely staff
My wife and I visited the Kent Hotel on a Sunday evening for dinner which was nice, upmarket style food at according prices. The staff however I found to have dampened our experience there. One of the waitresses in particular seemed to have a problem with me and it showed in the particularly small glass of $9 pinot that I believe to be a cheaper cab and in the body language displayed when not giving a tip. Nice spot for an evening meal, shame about the staff, thumbs down.

Well worth the wait!
There are many secret treasures that live in Melbourne and this pub is one of them. The food is some of the best you will taste for an upmarket pub and you can even see what is being cooked in the open kitchen.
All tastebuds are catered for, including vegetarians and the menu is not too outrageous with over the top ingredients. If you like your crumbed veal, this is the place to come too! Make sure to book ahead as it is quite popular!

Perfect for a sunny evening
After being recommended by a friend to try out the Kent, my partner and I headed down on a warm Saturday night. We arrived at about 7pm and it was very busy, we waited about 30 mins for an outside table - meanwhile the staff allocated indoors were very attentive and kind, always making sure we were okay for drinks or if we wanted to start with share plates inside. Once we were outside the wait staff were a little more frantic and uptight, presumably because it was so busy, but the atmosphere around with other patrons was relaxed with the weather being so nice. The food, once we received it was fantastic and definitely worth the wait. We will definitely go back, and I would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxed, upmarket style hotel to try this restaurant out. Would advise to book for a Saturday night (especially if you are wanting to sit outside or are beginning your night out a little later in the evening). Or to go midweek if you would prefer a quieter night out. Thumbs up
