Kawa

It is easy to walk straight past this Crown Street cafe with its crowded frontage, but Surry Hill locals know that this is one cafe that is worth waiting to get into. The pavement is littered with 'nanna's patio'-style outdoor furniture and breakfasting boho types, while inside more locals huddle over newspapers and organic meals at the long timber tables. Kawa specialises in largely organic food, big brekkies and great coffees, with an honourable mention going to the organic chicken meatball sandwich.

Kawa. We still love you. May we suggest...
I love the food at this place. The atmos, the deco, the location, the art on the walls.

have to ay the waitress who responded to me saying 'hi, can I have...'

with

"what table are you at?'

I stared at her, and she feebly replied (at least she got my surprise) was 'we need to know that first'. Not, sorry, I can't even manage hello. Right. But, at least I go the food part of my order quickly.

I joined my friends, whose food arrived an hour later after I did. My juice was finished before their food arrived (it WAS very nice, just the way I 'd asked-no ice)

It did get delivered way after people who came after me (make sense: I place my order, only to watch others behind me get theirs before me!)

Since I'd been successful at getting food on time, I checked on my friends' order. Their first attempt had been responded to with 'yeah, yes, I'll check' but no response or delivery. I got the same answer. They asked again and also got no response.

funny, I've been a waitress, and one thing you do get paid for is to smile and keep customers happy. To do your best to be friendly. And especially friendly when things are taking a long time. To be accurate as you can...and I do know what it's like to be understaffed - more smiling required.

The staff looked underpaid and overworked, but doing their best otherwise. And really, we were there to catch up and talk....but over an hour, with no attempt to communicate...it was a bit of a joke.

Really Kawa, I hope you're reading this - you need more staff on a sunday - you're very popular! If you're going to warrant a surcharge, perhaps the boss needs to be there on a sunday. I'm sure it's your busiest day.

Awful service, average food.
As a new resident of Surry Hills, I've been systematically testing out the local cafes in search of the perfect eggs florentine. This place showed promise, with its welcoming and crowded interior. Unfortunately, the disappointments began as soon as we set foot in the cafe. Standing at the counter waiting to place our order, the guy asked 'What do you want?' while staring somewhere behind me, so I assumed he was speaking to someone else. When I did place my order he was short and unhelpful. We ordered two breakfasts and two pots of tea. We waited almost half an hour for the tea. Battling fatigue and hangover on a Sunday morning, we then waited a further half hour for the food. We were never once approached by any staff member to explain the delay and tables who came well after us had eaten and left by the time we finally received our meals, after we'd gone to the counter to enquire about them twice. We were offered no explanation or apology from the waiter, who was also the one who took my order and appeared to be running the show - poorly. My companion questioned the delay and was told the kitchen was busy. She said it would have been nice if someone had apologised or explained why it was taking so long. The response 'No worries,' while backing away back to the counter. The eggs florentine was mediocre - the eggs were poached hard, the hollandaise vinegary and the spinach overcooked. And for $14, the portion was not generous. The fruit plate my friend ordered was fine. It's hard to do that badly, I suppose. All in all, really disappointing.
