Full of unbridled Spanish spirit, this Melbourne restaurant serves a delicious variety of traditional tapas to the sights and sounds of fiery flamenco dancers. Regular performances by the Melburnian Arte Kanela dance troupe guarantee the spice isn't reserved for the cooking. The signature dish here is the much-loved classic paella: rice and seafood cooked slowly in a large, cast-iron pan. It's simple cooking at its best and the generous servings mean it's best shared between friends. Diners can choose to sit in the modest outdoor area or inside, where the dim red lighting casts a warm glow over the rustic wooden furnishings.

Such a treat!!
After being recommended by several people to come experience Kanela i finally got a group of 8 together. We had to book way in advanced as they were booked out for 4 weeks and it was well worth the wait!! From the moment we walked in we were given the royal treatment! The waitress helped us with the menu, made it all so simple. They had a vast selection of Spanish drinks (and we went through them all!) The food was fantastic! The set menu is the perfect amount and combination. We could not resist the churros for desert and a spanish coffee. Then... we were completely blown away by the flamenco performance!!! This is no cheesy show... it is pure artist, pouring their hearts out! Amazing and a must see. Overall, the hype about this place is real and worth it and the most amazing thing is that its not even too expensive!! You can tell that the owners do this for the love of their culture. I will be back again and again and i highly recommend all to experience kanela for its food, atmosphere, service, drinks, flamenco and culture!

Los ninos
We arrived with the children in tow... a family of 5 looking for a place to eat. My children wanted to live there and we were so impressed we'll be back for Valentines Day dinner (without the children this time).

Valentines Day in little Spain
From the staff to the food you cannot fault Kanela. They let me practise my Spanish, they fed me food that made my mouth water and they put on a show that had the heart racing. It felt like we were in Spain. Thank you :)

Great tapas!
On this particular Tuesday night, this authentic Spanish restaurant was oddly quiet compared to the rest of the week. Although this was good since the staff could then be very attentive to us! The waitress was indeed Spanish and so I just asked her what her favourite tapas dishes were and ordered that! We had the tortilla, garlic prawns and the Spanish potato salad - all amazing flavours and fresh ingredients. We were both very full (having shared approximately six dishes) and with a jug of sangria, the bill was still under $80. Definitely going back!

Great night!
After reading about Kanela on this website I thought I would give it a go and I'm really happy I did! They were booked out but the lady offered us to come dine at the bar where they served the same menu. I recommend the spicy chicken, and the tortilla was really well done and a great size. Also the mussels in white wine were really good. The atmosphere was so Spanish! A really good night. Thanks guys!

Great Food & Atmosphere at a decent price.
I was recommended to this place by a work collegue who told me really good things about Kanela. I took my partner here for our 5 year anniversary. All I can say is that this place was awesome. This was our first ever experience at a Spanish restaurant and eating Spanish food. Everything from the food to the service was fantastic. The live Flamenco show was beautiful. The only minor gripe I had was that the restaurant was small but don't let that bother you as the food, service and Flamenco show makes up for it. To quote the famous words of Arnold Scwarznegger 'I'll Be Back'.

Great!
Had my 30th here. We were a big group of 28 people and everything went really good. From the service to the timing of the food, it was all perfect. Its a very cosy venue and they were very helpful to our needs. They even supplied us with a free birthday cake. The flamenco show is out of this world! and spotted a few celebs also. Recommend to all and I will be back for sure.

Fav Oz hangout!
I have been travelling around Australia for 7 months and recently arrived in Melbourne looking for that rumoured 'European' feel the city was supposed to have. I have definitely found it at this fantastic restaurant
I was recommended Kanela by a friend of mine who has been going to the place since it opened... and I can understand why! From the second you walk in, you're in a cosy bar in the middle of Madrid, confronted by the head of a bull and fantastic artworks on the walls of flamenco dancers... and that's just the beginning! The food is fantastic and tastes exactly like the raciones I ate in Madrid. Their signature sangria and paella was the best I'd ever had! And then there's the flamenco show... words are useless.

Spain in Australia!
I first heard about Kanela whilst watching Getaway when Catriona Rowntree did a segment on this firey little bar/restaurant in Johnston St, Fitzroy. I recently returned from my extensive travelling around Spain. As much as I loved the culture over there I did not taste any paella or see any flamenco as good as that at Kanela. I have been to Kanela on a number of occasions since and have bought friends and family there for them to experience the atmosphere. The knowledge of the performers on the history of flamenco and their passion for the dance is amazing. The Kanela experience is one that everyone should try!

Taste of Spain here in Melb!
I had my 30th here and I am so happy I selected this place! It was all great from the moment I walked in they were very helpful. The food was the best I have had since living in Spain. It made me feel like I was back there! Then the floor show was on and it actually brought me to tears. So raw and beautiful! I just wanted to say thank you to Kanela for making my birthday so special! Oh and as for the comment above, the point of tapas is that you soak up the oil and flavours from dishes themselves, it's the best bit!

The only saving grace was the flamenco stage show.
After confirming our booking twice, there was a mix up on their end. Food took forever to arrive. Quail was a bit greasy but the lamb kebabs were good. The stage show made the poor service and long waits bearable.
