Kam Fook

It's difficult to decide whether it is better to go to Kam Fook at lunch for yum cha or for an a la carte dinner with live fish and regional specialities. Perhaps it is best to just do both and be done with it! The restaurant that has long been feeding happy diners in Chinatown has spread its magic to the North Shore.

Kam Fook Restaurant - Why all the hype?
Attended Kam Fook yesterday around 2pm with a friend.
Service was quick but rude and pushy. The staff tried to "sell" us dishes which we did not want -obviously it had not been a busy day and they were trying to offload old & cold food which was destined for the garbage.
Salt & Pepper calamari was cold, oily and rubbery, spring rolls were saturated with oil as if they had not been cooked at a high enough temperature and were also nearing cold.
Prawn dumplings were not too bad, Pork pie was cold and pastry very very heavy. Rather disappointing for the premium price paid.
Before we had finished eating, the girl slapped the bill ~$50 (no drinks apart from tea) down on the table and came back a short time later demanding payment as "the till needs to be balanced" yet there were 7 or 8 other tables with people on them.
The one redeeming factor was the custard & sesame dumplings. Fantastic taste, not drenched in oil and excellent texture.
I will not be going to this restaurant again, especially noticing that it prides itself on Shark Fin.

Sadly disappointed
My family and I regularly frequent yum cha on the weekends and have dined in numerous yum cha restaurants in the greater Sydney area. We are always looking for new ones to try and thus we arrived at Kam Fook. The wait was a good 45 minutes however that I could live with, it was the cold food and overly exorbitant prices that left a bad taste all for food that was not as tasty or fresh as the many other notable yum cha restaurants in the area. Clearly I will not be back as there are so many others where, even when the restaurant is busy, are providing a considerably better service and food for less.

Be patient - the food's worth it
Wait you will at lunch time for Yum Cha - but is it worth it? Definitely! All sorts of delicacies will be wheeled past you - so don't hestitate - or the next table may grab the last one! Best with a group as you can sample more of the amazing dishes they serve. Reasonably priced.

Great Food - Outrageous Wait
It is great food and generally worth the frustrating wait to get a table. Last Saturday we turned up at noon and were given a ticket and told 45 mins. An hour and 45 mins later we got a table.
