Kailis Fish Market Cafe

Providing Perth with fresh seafood for 75 years, the Kailis Fish Market Cafe on Freo's Fishing Boat Harbour strikes the difficult balance between popular local eatery and tourist attraction. In addition to earning a place in the WA Tourism Award's Hall of Fame, Kailis was voted the Best Fish and Chips in WA by the public in the 2002-2003 Sunday Times Awards. The market and restaurant are under one roof, so you can browse the fresh market displays before settling down to your own fishy feast on the picturesque harbour.

The casual, canteen-style restaurant serves the seafood wrapped up in traditional paper, on cardboard trays or on melamine plates. It's not fine dining, but that's the beauty of it. If you did want something just a little more upmarket, try the barbecue and chilled Australian seafood menus featuring the famous seafood combo; a seared Tasmanian salmon fillet; grilled scallops or, of course, the catch of the day. The cafe serves a selection of coffees, cakes, biscuits and ice creams, while the bar provides an adequate array of boutique beers, as well as a selection of WA wines and Australian reds.

We had:
Fish and chips - chips were enjoyable good thick UK style (not thin French style). Fish was flakey and tasteless and batter taste was too strong. Prawns in batter with chips - prawns were watery and tasteless.
Cafe is self-service.
Location overlooking harbour is good but atmosphere is of large takeaway.
