At Kagu Ra Zaka, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the heart of Nagaoka's food region rather than the cultural hub of South Yarra, Melbourne. The wispy rice paper screens, delicate ceramic dishes and low-slung tables all evoke an unmistakably Japanese atmosphere. Coupled with this, the menu allows for a simple, frills-free dining experience, offering a range of sushi, soups, rice and noodle dishes. For oyster lovers, there's the slightly decadent kaki-furai oysters which are deep-fried and served with a savoury dipping sauce. There's even a range of Japanese drinks to quench parched mouths, including Oolong tea and Calpico soda. And, as at most low-key Japanese eateries, the prices are as friendly as the service.

Wonderful dinner experience
I visited this place for a very special dinner and have to second that the duck and shogayaki (pork) are spectacular! The portions are quite generous and the service is superb.

Very nice Japanese!
This restaurant is quite authentic in Japanese style and atmosphere, with Japanese chefs, waitresses and seating arrangements. The menu delivers classic Japanese dishes at very reasonable prices. The nasu dengaku (fried eggplant with miso sauce) and the age dashi tofu and fantastically done. The main courses are quite generous and ideally shared between two. The shogayaki (pork) and sizzling teppanyaki plate are lovely. Very nice and will no doubt return!

Always excellent
Having visited Japan many times, I can say that Kagu Ra Zaka serves excellent Japanese food very consistently. The owners and staff are actually Japanese, so a little persistence may be required to overcome any language difficulty, but the service is always obliging, attentive and efficient. The shogayaki is a favourite (pork in ginger and plum sauce served with a traditional side-salad of finely shredded cabbage) and the rice is actually very good quality rice, quite possibly imported from Japan, which would account for the price-tag. Also recommended is the Kagu ra zaka duck (a Japanese equivalent of Peking duck and very delicious) and the shabu shabu (beef and vegetable hot pot) is also delicious and great value. Highly recommended.

A strange experience
Our visit to this restaurant left us disappointed. When we phoned to make a booking, we requested a Japanese-style table, but when we arrived we were told one hadn't been booked for us and that there were none available. This was disappointing, but made even worse when two of the Japanese tables were left vacant for the entire time we where in the restaurant. They obviously hadn't been booked after all! Our meals were fine, but the presentation didn't impress. I had the shogayaki (ginger pork) which was essentially a pile of meat on a plate, with a side salad of cabbage. I couldn't believe the price for a small bowl of rice - $2! You'd get a whole bucket of the stuff for that price in some restaurants! My boyfriend has chicken katsu which was just a couple of cutlets on the plate, again with a salad of cabbage. It looked like it had just been thrown together, not a well thought-out meal at all. Then, the pinnacle of the evening came when another diner walked in with a dog on a lead, and sat down at a table and proceeded to order. None of the staff commented, or even noticed, the dog. It wasn't a seeing eye dog, or any other guide dog, it was someone's spoiled pooch. I wasn't aware it was even legal to bring a dog inside a restaurant? All in all, a very weird evening.

Some of the best Japanese food in Melbourne!
I lived in Japan for over a year and can happily report that Kagu Ra Zaka serves REAL Japanese food made by REAL Japanese chefs!
The quality of the food is fabulous. Some members of my table groaned in sublime satisfaction!
We highly recommend the fried oysters and the garlic scallops. The gyoza and nasudengaku (eggplant) are also winners! Beautiful!
