Most of the customers you will see in Joy Garden are devoted regulars. The reason why they keep coming back is not only because the Cantonese food is so good, but because it is so consistently good. For those new to Joy Garden, the best thing to do is just submit to the staff and let them choose the dishes for you. Otherwise just look around at your fellow customers and spot the rapturous expressions over dishes like chilli crab, crispy-skin chicken or Patagonian toothfish.

This is what it is all about
Dim sum is about great food and company. Joy garden does this perfectly. Food comes out fresh, tasty and timely. The building is not the newest but never let that out you off. What do they say..... never read a book by it's cover.

Definitely not as good as it was
Joy Gardens used to be one of the premier dim sum places in Perth. But gone are the days where it set the standard.
It is never a good sign when you go for yum cha on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant appears half empty with broken glass windows on the outside.
The service was just below par for an Asian restaurant with our teapot usually empty and the trolley carts slow to come around.
The quality of the dim sum was poor. The prawns in the prawn dumpling not fresh and the translucent wrapping sticky and floury. The same could be said of the 'siew mai' with the wonton wrapping hard, wrinkled and dry. None of the beef dishes were appetising.
They did do a reasonable salted egg yolk and custard steamed bun which is one of their specialities, with the creamy (and indulgent) custard just oozing sumptiously out of a perfectly steamed bun.
However, that does not redeem this restaurant. Looking around, it is obvious that the standard has dropped and the usual clientele have gone elsewhere.

Hmmm...
We use to come here to eat yum cha. It used to be the talk of the town - ask someone in the Asian community and they would highly recommend this place, so we came here to eat. All of what we had ordered was salty. Not to mention that our table wasn't exactly stable.
