John Street Cafe

This quaint cafe, off the main drag and down John Street, is a well-kept secret among locals. The inviting alfresco area is shaded by Cottesloe's Norfolk pines and dotted with funky red and white chairs. Breakfast is available till 3.30pm, though the lunch options are tempting enough to make you skip brekkie and dive straight in to a plate of tuna and lime cakes with artichokes, salad and aioli dip, or a chicken, pine nut and mushroom pie with sweet potato mash and gravy. The tabletops are painted by Perth's much-loved artist Joss Myres, and are not for sale unfortunately, however the artworks by Catherine Connor are. If you want a little piece of the John Street Cafe for less than the price of a painting, the deli offers a stellar selection of take-home dinners and desserts to fraudulently pass off as your own.

Really nice
This place is wonderful, off the 'beaten' track and hidden away, it serves great food and the staff are usually on the ball. I will be going back again and again!!

Overall? Not bad but forgettable
It was an overcast spring morning (destined to clear up and cause some awesome sunburn). Seven of us were sat together. And there was non-stop chatter the entire time we were at John St Cafe - which is a bad sign, as we tend to demonstrate periods of dead quiet if the culinary experience calls for it. The coffee was weak. I didn't have the freshly squeezed orange juice but those of our table who did questioned its freshness. And the food: I don't even remember. I had the vegetarian lot and struggled with undercooked beans. Everything else was satisfactory but the beans ruined my meal. We all ordered different things... Food was had - and necessary to fuel our lazy boozy sunday ahead. Yet not one of us bothered to rave or rant about the food. In honesty, it wasn't too good or too bad. The staff were friendly and efficient including the brunette whom we all guessed was hungover as she served the oj of questionable freshness. The atmosphere was light, casual and joyous with people who, like us, couldn't be bothered making their own breakfast. It was the first time I'd been there and I expected something more from what I had previously thought was a Perth breakfast great. But I think next time I'll try the lunch menu.

A lovely place for brunch!
I have been to John St cafe a number of times with friends now. I went there with my Mother for Sunday brunch and the place was packed. We were actually a little concerned that we might have to wait for ages and that the quality may not be as good as usual due to the number of people that were there. It was however a truly fantastic brunch! Both the food and drinks came out promptly by smiling, enthusiastic and cheerful staff. I ordered the salmon benedict which was faultless. A generous amount of salmon, perfectly poached eggs, the freshest of english muffins and a beautifully balanced hollandaise. The fresh fruit and vegetable juices there are great also. The menu is unique without being pretentious and there is a generally welcoming yet industrious ambience about the place. Great value for money given the lovely quaint location, the freshness of the food and the amount of thought that has clearly gone into the place :)
