Joe's Garage

This bustling restaurant is usually full, although it's only a short wait at the bar for a table. There are plenty of vegetarian options on the menu, and a selection of deliciously naughty desserts.

Very Unpleasant
The humble Joe's Garage is well known as a Brunswick St cafe and eatery. However on my last visit my experience was very disappointing.
For a start, the menu offers a choice of basic hearty meals and with their respective prices (not that cheap), you'd expect them to be of a decent quality at least. But when the food came out, the salad was limp and old, and the chicken wasn't heated properly. Sounds dangerous to me.
The floor and bar was very dirty.

The staff were working very hard as it was busy, but they're understaffed and the employer (or manager) was rather rude to her staff, as I observed.
Certainly look elsewhere if you want a basic feed. There are plenty of other choices on Brunswick St and at least they'll give you a quality meal for your money.

What a Joke!
Have visited Joes Garage a number of times, and have always enjoyed the food and especially the friendly service. However, the last time we visited it was a totally different story. The food was of below average standard, and the floor staff were extremely incompetent.

Not sure why the bad rep, I like it
Don't know why people have been hating on this restaurant, maybe they were less lucky than I.

My friends and I find this restaurant to be wonderful, very casual and Brunswicky. The pizza is very good and the pastas are great, can't comment on the steak as I haven't had it but it is probably equally decent. I found the food was well prepared and not pretentious.

Service is ok, I found myself occasionally having to get a waiter however they served me without trouble and were friendly enough.

I like the atmosphere as its busy fairly often and it always plays good music from back in the day, which suits the overall '70s theme of the restaurant.

This one may become a regular of mine.

Joe's Garage - arrogance to the max
It's a great place if it's late and you're hungry, as the food is more often than not quite tasty (the couscous salad is nice, but the dressing needs more zing. Pizza surprisingly good. Ribs are FANTASTIC). The service, however, is appalling. I moved to Melbourne from Sydney to get away from this snooty and supercilious rubbish. Very disappointing.

Pick up your act
Went to Joe's Garage some years ago the service excellent the staff were friendly and on the ball BUT I went back a few weeks back, the cafe half full waiting staff were only interested in talking to themselves, I only got service when I flagged down a passing waiter and his attitude was "why are you bothering me", I then had to wait extended time for my meal - there are better cafes in Brunswick Street.

Buy 1 get 1 free?
When we got there the girl that was serving us wasn't all too friendly. She came across as she had not wanted to be there at all, let alone to work and serve customers.
We ordered the porterhouse, Greek salad & the lamb shanks. Lamb shanks were great, such a big serving that we were unable to finish it. The porterhouse was chewey with fat & inedible bits in it so most was left on the plate. The mustard mash potato that came with it was the best though. I don't think you can ever get Greek salad wrong so that was fine.
Then came to using the voucher which was Buy 1 main & get 1 free up to the amount $30 (via sms). Whoever took our bill apparently could not work the register so instead of getting 1 meal free, it gave us credit of $12 only.
This was a problem he could not fix so we were told at least it paid for most of the meal.
Probably would not come back too often.
