Decked out with fishy thingamabobs, nautical articles, surfy stuff and marine memorabilia, Joe's Fish Shack in Fishing Boat Harbour is Freo's funkiest seafood restaurant. After years of reeling in fish, Joe turned his hand to cooking and his creations are quite a catch. Using produce pulled locally from WA waters, Joe serves up a storm of seafood delights, such as stuffed tiger prawns and crumbed Freo sardine starters; Lake Argyle barramundi; Coral Bay king snapper; and the mouth-watering seafood platter for two. (There are pasta, vegetarian and meat mains too.) If you can still find room, you could finish off with an old-school sticky date pudding, or the more exotic-sounding coppa bianco. Maybe you'd prefer to partake in a few glasses of your favourite tipple? Joe's bar is just as well stocked with beers, wines and spirits as his fridge is with fish. In the warmer months, while you drink in the expansive harbour views from the spacious deck or air-conditioned restaurant, you can sip classic cocktails from Joe's summer drinks menu.

Unbelievable
I am an American who's lived in Australia for about a year. I visited this restaurant on Saturday night with my partner, although we hadn't heard good things we decided to try it. Big mistake! We waited almost 10 minutes after being seated for anyone to even come see us, and that was after I flagged someone down. We then placed our drink orders, asked for water and placed our order for entrees. The girl then took our menus away. I had to stop her, saying we would still like to order mains. Our drinks took 10mins and came wrong. Entrees arrived and the food was fairly good. We then tried to get anyones attention for another drink order and to order our mains no one seemed to be around. I finally went to the bar and asked for more drinks and had someone who seemed to be the manager ask me to sit and someone would be with me. After I explained that no one seemed to be showing up, she took our drink order and order for mains. The mains showed up and we're also fairly good. We then asked for the check, as we were not going to stay after all that for coffee and desserts and asked two different girls and still no check. We then got up and figured out where to go and pay, and had our entertainment card, and the girl behind the register couldn't even figure out how to cash it off. She then got a manager after about 5 minutes and we then tried to complain about the service and only got, "well sorry but we're busy". So we left, never to be returning.

A night to forget
Gold Plate Awards should be rescinded if restaurants' standards fall. Let me start, the food was disgusting despite being moderately expensive. They even managed to bugger up the chips which were soggy and oily. My stuffed prawns were stuffed alright, so stuffed that all I could taste was the bland, over-salted stuffing mixture. Deb's salt and pepper squid was like the dregs of the deep fryer had been served with the toughest overcooked squid they could find and was inedible.
Main of spanish mackeral was tasty but overcooked and a bit dry, chips I have alreasd commented on and the coleslaw was the same as you can buy from any fast food joint. Deb had crayfish which was tiny and once again tough, I thought that tough crayfish was impossible but they managed to find a way. Our son had fish and chips, he loved the fish once we had taken it out of the oily greasy batter but even he (a dedicated chip fan) left his chips.
