The US diner movement in Sydney began slowly. First it was South, diligently plying its trade north of the bridge in relative obscurity. Then around the corner popped up Blue Plate, still on the outskirts but proving there was more to stateside diner food than just kitsch and gimmickry. Now we have a southern-fried diner right in the epicentre of Sydney's food scene.
As you'd expect, the fit-out matches the food, with a black-and-white motif of leather booths, requisite jukebox and retro jazz posters adorning the walls to complete the '50s diner look. The food itself is a mixed bag of traditional and modern interpretations of every slice of Americana you could think of. The mandatory cheeseburger kicks things off in classic style before buffalo wings take a contemporary turn. There's even a salad of fried green tomatoes (must be pronounced with a southern drawl) in case you're feeling inspired to befriend elderly strangers. Top it all off with a slice of pie, and that there's some good eats.
