Jazushi

A combination of a jazz club and a Japanese restaurant, Jazushi is nothing if not original. This odd mixture of East and West is perfectly matched by the eclectic Japanese-fusion food. The oriental-style outdoor garden provides a more peaceful setting, but the atmospheric main room offers casual sophistication and live jazz five nights a week.

dinner for two - TERRIBLE service
I had heard that this place was good so we went for a simple dinner for two on a friday night - it wasn't very busy but the meal took TWO HOURS and the service was very weird - when we complained about the lenght of time we were waiting the manager said it wasn't his fault and as he was talking to us the kitchen staff - just behind him - were laughing at him? VERY WEIRD. I thought we were on some comedy skit. Possibly the worst experience in a resturant I have ever had.

Where is the jazz music?
We arrived on a busy Friday night with a group of 10 friends. Our table was upstairs in the open courtyard where we couldn't hear any jazz music (the jazz man is located on the ground floor) and in a chilly environment (a couple of heaters).

The service was friendly but really slow and chaotic. Finally our mains arrived after 1 hour wait.

The food was overall quite good, a mix of Japanese and modern Australian cuisine. Quite fresh, well presented and tasty. Each of us ordered a main meal and we had some bowls of edamame (green beans).

Then the time of the bill came. Ok, even considering that when you are in a big group of friends you can expect to pay a bit more, definitely the price at the end didn t justify the food, nor the wait, nor the absence of music in what is supposed to be a sort of jazz club.

Dinner for two
Entering off the street you're instantly drawn to the simplicity and elegance of the main dining room. The brick work complemented the dark wooden tables and red cushions. We were first in this evening (7pm), the room quickly filled and the resident pianist took up the ivories, gently gliding just above the conversation levels.

We enjoyed 3 dishes, tempura rolls, pork belly and the sushi & sashimi plate for 2. The rolls were exquisite and the pork belly delicious and very tender. The plate didn't work for me - almost laughingly embarrasing considering it alone was $48 and left you wondering where the rest of it was.

In hindsight I suggest trying 3-4 distinct mains as they are individually good value. We did BYO but also enjoyed a bottle of the verdelho on the wine list.

I noted the music played by our friend the pianist deceptively included modern pop songs (think Coldplay) given a verbose jazz flavour but he did a good job reading and blending with the crowd.

Some hidden secrets lay upstairs with two other dining areas. Not as cheap as I would have thought but owe a lot of the bill to the shared plate's short comings.

Otherwise had a great time, meal and drink in a very relaxed atmosphere with a beautiful girl. Who could ask for more? ;)
