Fringed by Italianate columns and looking out over the designer boutiques of Martin Place, the addition of a sleek Italian restaurant to Sydney's GPO building seems oh-so-fitting. Its presence announced by a small row of coveted alfresco tables on the colonnade, Intermezzo stretches back into the eight-storey atrium of the heritage-listed edifice. Taking full advantage of the original elegance of the building, the restaurant is packed with enough tortoiseshell-hued marble, soaring arches and glowing timber to make even the most harried office worker feel like Sophia Loren or Rudolph Valentino.

Excellent food, service and ambience. In the early days it suffered from appallingly slow food service that almost meant it was a place that had to be avoided at lunch, but they seem to have solved that.
