Ing Doi

When the family behind Collingwood's Ing Doi still lived in Chiang Mai in Thailand, they were 'close to the mountains', which is the English translation of ing doi. While there aren't too many mountains in Melbourne, it is true that Ing Doi is situated at the base of a steady incline on Collingwood's Victoria Parade. A homely theme runs throughout Ing Doi's menu. There are soups—the favourite being the lemongrass, kaffir lime, chilli and prawn tom yum goong—and a selection of the types of dishes expected from your friendly local Thai restaurant, such as fish cakes, red and green curries and spicy salads. For something new, try the sliced rockling steamed in red curry paste and coconut milk or the deep-fried whole snapper topped with sweet and sour chilli sauce.

Great find
We stayed near by and decided this was as far as we wanted to walk for dinner. We chose to have the All-you-can-eat menu option available on Monday and Tuesday nights and were mostly happy with it. It cost $29.90 a head and while serves were generally smaller than the regular menu items, it made for an excellent Thai "degustation" menu for us. We especially enjoyed the salmon salad, Thai style fried rice with chicken and the duck and pineapple curry. The crispy skinned pork and brocolli was fine, as were the prawns in a spicy red sauce, but the garlic stir fried squid was a bit tired and chewy. The sticky rice with banana and orange ice cream left us wishing we'd had more. Service was at times a bit sloppy, but always bright and enthusiastic and apologetic if they happened to forget something. Looking forward to our next visit.
