Incontro

Just a hop across from the jetty, Incontro is a popular tourist haunt, but that hasn't stopped the locals. Ladies do lunch here, expectant mums compare bumps, business people conduct power meetings, retirees take it easy and young couples meet for an intimate tete-a-tete. And with wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the river, all are afforded a view of Perth's stunning skyline - from Kings Park to Burswood Casino.

Inside, the decor is light and minimal, so as not to distract the eye from that spectacular view - or the food. At breakfast, it's easy to be tempted by Spanish omelettes and Turkish bircher muesli. The lunch and dinner menu is modern Mediterranean with a distinct seafood edge, including WA lobster, a crustacean plate, and freshly shucked oysters. Why not wash it all down with a prime glass from the wine list, or perhaps splash out on a bottle from the extensive cellar selection, while slowly drinking in that view.

Great night at Incontro
Well I must say I am surprised reading the reviews from others. Incontro must have picked up it's game!

Went there on a Saturday night with my partner without a booking. We were told there would be a half an hour wait and we could wait at the bar or on the lounged if we wanted to wait. We waited at the bar and had 2 amazing cocktails and another drink each before we were seated right next to the window with a view to Kings Park and the City Skyline, great seats!

Water was continuously filled and the staff were very quick with the service. I must say the tiered entrees and mains is a great idea. Basicaly if you cant decide on a meal, my partner and I couldnt decide between 4, you could get the 4 meals in a Tier Meal, the same size as if we had just ordered the 2 mains. This is the same for the entree! It's fantastic.

The only thing we didnt really enjoy eas the atmoshpere. There were 2 big groups quite close to us making it quite noisy, but thats no fault of the restaurant.

Highly recommend and will be heading back again very soon

Oh, it is pricey

Our 4 tiered entrees instead of 2 entrees
Our 4 tiered mains instead of 2 mains
2 deserts
6 cocktails, 1 bottle of wine and 3 beers

was about $350, so not to bad I guess

Typically Perth
$4.50 coffees and food you could cook yourself at home for over $15 per dish. Service was slow and we had similar issues getting tap water.

Less than expected
Six of us headed to Incontro for dinner on a Saturday night. We were seated nicely and quickly pounced upon for drink orders. Then it took approx 20 minutes or so for them to hand out menus. Starters included the risotto, crumbed whitebait, squid, Italian sausage and kangaroo. The overall opinion was that it was bland. The Italian sausage was overcooked and a little chewy/hard. Mains ranged from the fish of the day to the scotch fillet, the pork and the pizza. Again nice food but nothing to rave about. Coffee and desserts followed (nothing exciting here). Lastly the bill appears with a 10% of total cost surcharge for a Saturday.

Oh the disappointment
We arrived on time and were met at the door by a less than welcoming woman, wbo seemed harassed and pointed to a table as she dashed off to assist another table. In retrospect we should have left then but we seated ourselves and perused the menus.

We were asked if we would like sparking or still bottled water we obviously shocked the waitress by asking for regular tap water - her face was a picture.

The tap water did appear eventually and half a glass each was poured - it was an effort to get a refill even though we asked several times throughout the meal. The first waitress did appear flourishing a bottle of sparking and when I mentioned we wanted regular water she scowled and disappeared.

We found the menu limited - it was further restricted when we were told (after we had made a choice) that 3 of the main courses we off and there was no substitution (well they'd been busy).

The second waitress, who looked after us, would have benefited from being better informed about the menu. She had to go and ask the chef if the meal I wanted had cheese in it. I asked if I could have grilled fish and was told that the fish on the menu had already been battered - this is fine dining?

Our main courses arrived, and although frugal were nicely presented and edible. There was nothing at all special about the food.

The next point of disatisfaction came with the desserts. My companion ordered the passionfruit brulee and it arrived nicely caramelised but once the crisp caramel was cracked, a sloppy slurry of custard lay underneath. It looked like pre-packaged custard with passionfruit puree stirred through it. It looked most unappetising.

She politely mentioned to the first waitress that the dessert wasn't set, and was immediately told that she was obviously mistaken because that's how it was supposed to be - it's a French dessert and this is how we make it here. There was no offer to exchange the dish or even an acknowledgement that they may have fallen short of the mark.

The woman was so unbelievably rude it was dreadful. Rather than making a scene I kept quiet but decided I'd call them the next day and make a point of sending them one of my favourite recipes for creme brulee that includes the tip "bake custards approximately for 35-40 minutes until the custard is set."

We asked for the bill and my female companion proffered her credit card. This was whisked away by the older woman and a few moments later the receipt was returned to the table for signature and given to her husband - obviously that particular staff member at In Contro has no idea about protocol. The final insult was the 10% surcharge because it was Sunday.

Well for me, the only thing Incontro has going for it is the location - it's overpriced with indifferent food and substandard service.

Fiesta
A meeting of eight like-minded men and with their women - who may have had minds of their own - brought us to dine at Incontro. Some had been before.

The service was impeccable and outstanding. Attentive to the last detail and minute. Boy, did those boys and girls earn their crust.

Extremely efficient, competent and pleasant. No detail missed. Menus appeared without asking, beverages were kept topped up on a very regular basis, finger bowls with all necessary meals, to mention a select few. The wine list appealed, as did the beer and cocktail selections.

There was food to suit all palates. We started with a selection of breads and dips, including the Italian plate that was divine, especially the warm olives and sausage.

The main meals disappeared as fast with the usual popular choices of chicken, steak and the seafood plate consumed without complaint. The steaks were done perfectly to meet the diners' needs and the seafood offered ample choice and was cooked superbly.

Desserts were consumed by most, with the exception of one or two who only partook of the coffees. The brulee proved popular and very filling, whilst the peach crumbled was remarked upon.

I'd do it again, but change the shape of the table. A round table would have helped me to get to know the other parties to our group.
