Gusto means "taste" in Italian, and there's plenty of that at Il Gusto Restaurant. One of Lygon Street's charming Italian eateries, Il Gusto has a buzzing, umbrella-covered alfresco area out the front, and intimate dining rooms spanning two storeys. Open for lunch and dinner, Il Gusto serves seafood, steak, veal, chicken, lamb, pasta, risotto, bruschetta and a slew of other authentic Italian sensations. There's even a kangaroo steak on the menu for those who feel like an Italian-Aussie mix.

great service , great feed , and terrific atmosphere.
I went there with my partner a week after Valentine's Day and the experience was unforgettable. Everything was so organised over there that you just have to think of something and it's on the table by the friendly staff. We were sitting on a nice table on the verandah and the weather and food was just perfect. Many people told me not to go there coz of the comments on the internet, but I still gave it a go and would love to go there again and again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Fantastic pasta
My partner raved about the food at Il Gusto, so on our Melbourne visit we planned our Friday dinner there. Thankfully it did not disappoint. Both of our pasta dishes, a spaghetti marinara and a penne matriciana, were cooked to perfection, with the pasta having just the right texture, and the sauces delicious.
The service was attentive and friendly, and more importantly for a cake love, the tiramisu was fantastic !

'il gusto' means taste...I don't think so
Unfortunately I have absolutely nothing good to say about il gusto. We have been there before a while ago and thought the meals were very average but decided to give it another go as once again the old man kept going on about how fresh and italian and cheap he was.... It was a disaster, I had the 'special' crab pasta that was a crab cut in half thrown in with some pasta and a can of tomatos it seemed, my husbands al fungi was just as bad. The meals had absolutley no flavour. What really did my head in was that no one came to ask how our meals were even though the old man and a lady maitre'de was standing in front of us the whole time. So at the end, out of curtesy we told the lady that we were willing to pay for the meal but not the corkage because it was such an average meal she not only told us that we had to pay for corkage but was threatening to call the police because we said we didn't agree. Last time I checked il gusto were spruiking about the best meals in Lygon so you would think, that someone would make sure that all the customers are happy with the meal, this is not Mcdonalds where you get up and take the meal to the counter to tell them it's not good.
To further put a nail in the coffin, when we left my husband was standing next to the old man asking to speak to the owner of the restaurant so we could make a complaint, the woman ran out of the restuarant and yelled at us in front of all the customers. I have never been so insulted nor treated in such a manner for trying to be honest about a meal. We should have done what my husband had suggested, just get up and leave. They were lucky to get any money at all, and this woman wasn't willing to take the corkage off the bill to make unhappy customers happy... I'd also like to point out she was giving away free bottles of wine to make people sit down and eat. It would take me a lot more than a bottle of wine to ever sit there again.
