Il Centro

Il Centro has been a fixture in the fine-dining culture of Brisbane since 1992, and throughout that time has gathered itself a cabinet full of foodie awards. Innovations have been made, but the best dishes on what is a very good menu remain the central Italian and Roman dishes. Chef Romain Bapst's signature crab lasagne beats all. While the dining room is large and boisterous (especially after the installment of a floor-to-ceiling window with views of the river and the Story Bridge), the service copes admirably well.

Veal is beautiful
I went there for a work dinner and loved it. beautiful atmosphere. Great service- friendly waiters/s. The veal was amazing.. not overly rich.
Pretty expensive though. lovely location by the river.

Sandcrab Lasagne to die for
When mentioning to a friend we were going to Ill Centro he recommended trying the sandcrab lasagne. It was available in entree (amongst a selection platter) or in main size. We choose they entree option and I wish I ordered the main it was absolutely delicious as were the other entrees. Fresh, great combination of ingredients and well presented.

Service was above average, knowledgable and friendly. The waiter was very helpful with selecting an italian wine as we were not familar with the great selection.

Pleasant more sophisticated atmosphere. Probably need to book ahead and make a specific request for intimate seating or river views, as I noticed there is tables alongside the open kitchen with may not be as pleasant.

All round good value for money.

Go The Sandcrab
My husband and I have been here many times, mostly for his work dinners with clients. This day we went for my birthday. The Maitre 'd always remembers us even if it's been many months between meals. I always have the sandcrab lasagna. It's to die for. The service this particular night was below the normal high standard. It is pricey but nice for a special occasion, particulary as it overlooks the river and Story Bridge.

Nice dinner - not sure it's worth the bill
I've been here about three times now.
The only thing I order now though is the Sand crab lasagne because it's the most amazing food I've ever tasted.
I have ordered a steak here and it was so over cooked I had to ask them to take it back and I was paying over $40!
My husband had a beautifully cooked lamb shoulder here which was amazing and the oysters are always nice.
I wouldn't go here though as a choice other than to have the sand crab lasagne. The meals can not always be reliable and when you're paying top dollar prices it can be a bit disappointing!

So So Italiano
It was a Wednesday evening, rain had relieved the heat and overwhelming humidity of a warm Brisbane summer day. That's why I was surprised to find this place buzzing with people when we arrived for our 7.30pm reservation. So what was all the fuss about? We thought we'd find out.

The seafood chowder was tasty but a bit watery - I expected it to be more creamy and chunky. The sand crab and avocado salad was very nice and well presented, but where was the other crab claw!?

Mains were a little less impressive, with the quail overcooked and accompanied by a sprinkling of rubbery carrot pieces. The snapper, however, was much better, but still nothing incredible.

Service overall was okay, if a little slow, but I felt overall that prices were a bit on the high side. With mains hovering around the $35-45 mark, and wines with as much as a 400% mark-up, this left a lot to be desired. And at $4 for a bread roll ("panini" literally means little breads in Italian, so where were the rest of them?), well you'd expect complimentary bread rolls at these prices.

I left the place wondering why it was so busy on a wet Wednesday evening. Must be the river view.
