Ichi Ni Izakaya

Sitting pretty on St Kilda's lively Esplanade, Ichi Ni Izakaya marches to the beat of its own drum. Part Japanese restaurant, part takeaway sushi and sashimi spot, and part sake and tapas bar, this is a true Japanese "izakaya", or tavern. Groups can tuck into the tapas menu for a sharing frenzy, with light bites like prawns in Japanese mustard mayonnaise, gyozas, and grilled kingfish. For something more substantial, diners can watch in awe as the chefs in the open kitchen cook up sizzling authentic yakitori-style meats, such as wagyu beef and eel. It's easy to cool down afterwards with the wide range of Japanese wines and beers to devour while letting the bay views and breezes seep in.

Didn't live up to expectations!
After a long week at work we were really looking forward to heading out for some nice food and drink in a great location and decided to try out Ichi Ni. Fab location and on a great evening, it should have been a good dining experience.
We arrived at the door and were ignored by 5 of the staff. Eventually the maitre'd spoke to us and we were seated, he was not pleasant in the slightest.
There seemed to be a lot of confusion around who was serving our table.Either asked too many times for drinks orders or ahd to wait ages for food order to be taken. When we asked about the menu, 2 staff did not have a clue about it and couldn't recommend anything.
The food was pretty good but we have had better.
When we left there were no 'thankyou's', 'goodbye's'.
For a place which has so much potential it was really dissappointing!

Definately going again!
After reading very mixed reviews I was invited to attend Ichi Ni for dinner. I have frequented many a Japanese restaurant in Melbourne and think I am hard to impress, as I used to live in Japan. I would absoltely come back here again. The staff were so attentive - when my water glass was half full someone was there to top it up. Everything tasted impeccable, particularly the pork belly and the oysters - we ordered a second serve of both. I was impressed with the wasabi prawns (great balance of flavour, the wham of the wasabi against the saltiness of the prawn, and they were cooked to perfection), as well as the zucchini (impressive mandolin-thin slices of poached zucchini which cleansed the palate wonderfully). Though admittedly I didn't look at the sakelist, we enjoyed two bottles of wine from a comprehensive wine list. As the sun was setting in St Kilda and we watched the sun set on this summer's night, it was a perfect night out.

Good atmosphere, speedy service, the food............average
I went to ichi ni today for dinner and was quite dissapointed. The atmosphere was good, although not really izakaya style as the staff really should do the 'irashaimasen' when anyone comes in and 'arigatogozaimasu' when anyone leaves. The service was really good though, the food came out quickly, was hot and fresh, staff were always on hand to take orders too. As for the food though, hmmm, quite ordinary at overpriced for what it was. The california rolls were tiny, karaage (fried chicken) was small and overcooked, onigiri (rice ball) with el cheapo bega cheese was ordinary, tonkatsu (pork cutlet) was really tough and tasted like cheap pork, Miso pork belly was nothing special either, tempura was nice but came with a strange beetroot yoghurt rather than traditional grated daikon dipping sauce, fish was nice though as was the Yakitori (Grilled Chicken), desert of chocolate spring roll was a really poor end to an average meal. Including drinks was $70 per person which I'd be happy to pay if it was nicer, but well it wasn't. I suppose though, on a summer afternoon it would be nice to sit on the balcony and drink a couple of overpriced beers with some yakitori, thats about it though. I've had much better in other izakayas in Melbourne at cheaper prices.

Wouldn't bother returning
Second attempt at Ichi Ni. First time my partner and I were not acknowledged for 5 minutes upon entering the establishment so we left. If this were a real Japanese izakaya all the staff would've screamed 'irashaimase' in unison as soon as we walked in the door. This was most certainly not the case on either occasion for me. Service was very poor. Food was so average and over priced. The gyu or beef option on the yakitori menu (which by the way means fried chicken) was not remotely Japanese in style or flavour and it was cold by the time it reached our table. Absolutely terrible. The staff had no idea about the sake list and mispronounced everything on the menu. However, the atmosphere was fun and everyone around me appeared to be having a good time. I just can't understand why.
