I Carusi II

Simply elegant, with only a single European-style cycling print on the back wall for decoration, this pizza classic was spawned from the Brunswick original. The closely spaced, linen-clothed tables are testament to I Carusi II's popularity - the place packs out every night, spilling out onto the footpath seating. There are 23 pizzas on the menu, plus sweet pizzas and gelati to follow.

Promising in theory, let down in execution
A truly great pizza is built on a great foundation: a thin, flavoursome base, a pleasing sugo (sugars and acid in balance) and hand-torn buffalo mozzarella (or fior di latte). The perfect minimalistic expression of these elements is the margarita pizza.

Sadly, this is one pizza that I Carusi II does not get right. The tasteless, salt-deprived base, married to acidic tomato sugo, is not off to a good start.

The rest of the diners, packed in as they were, did not seem to share my plight. Nor did the loud young girls celebrating a birthday in full voice. In spite of the morbid low-lighting, it's really too loud a venue to be taking a date to.

I think this is a real step down from the leading group of authentic Italian pizzerias in suburban Melbourne.

Excellent food matched by genuine service
This is my new favourite restaurant. If you love pizza then I Carusi II is a must see, one way, non stop ride to taste bud titillation. The pizza reminds me of Roma - try the prosciutto and fetta. Indulge yourself with the calzone chocolate parcel - the exquisite pleasure then all the guilty and dirty thoughts of more - mon dieu! Wonderfully soft lighting, non pretentious decor and just plain ol' real friendly staff. Oh.. and take your wallet, cash only for a meal and a nice chianti.

Authentic Italian feel...
I haven't been to Italy yet but I imagine the pizzerias to be exactly the same as I Carusi II. The pizzas are amazing. Thin bases, tasty toppings and crunchy crusts.
There may be a lot of things on the menu and a bit hard to read but the pizza was well worth it. Make sure you leave room for the chocolate calzone which comes with vanilla bean ice cream. Amazing! The room is a bit small and you do sit shoulder to shoulder but it was well worth it. Our waitress was Italian and was very kind and polite. We will definitely be back for more.

Not bad, but not great
I've eaten here three or four times because I live nearby, and while the range of true Italiano pizzas is refreshing, they can sometimes be overly oily. Also, last time I went there I ordered the gambino piccante pizza, which for $17 came with a total of four smallish prawns and not much else.

If you want a quiet night this is not the place to go either, they pack the clientele in shoulder to shoulder and it gets quite loud at peak times.

The chocolate pizza is fantastic.

Aaaah REAL pizza!
This place seems to be open very late. Take a while to pour over the menu which lists many ingredients, many of which may seem foreign to those used to ordering Hawaiian or The Lot.

Dark, cosy and very traditional with red wine being served in regular, small milk glasses and some nice seating out the front (but the pavement can be squishy for pedestrian traffic).

This place and it's sister venue in Brunswick gets back to what authentic pizzas are like. Like the last reviewer said, make sure to leave room for a dessert pizza!!

Fresh and unforgettable
I enjoyed a work Christmas party at I Carusi II last year and have not forgotten how full of flavour the pizzas were. Yum! The service was good and the chocolate and pear pizzas we ate for dessert are still spoken of.
