Set to one side of the wide, history-laden, sandstone courtyard inside the walls of the barracks, the cafe is a warm, sophisticated dining space with a large fireplace along one wall for the cooler months and outdoor tables for spring and summer.

What a surprise
Out for the day, Sydney born and bred, but one of those days when you pretend you're a tourist. So we decided to visit some historic sites. On our list the Hyde Park Barracks in Macquarie Street. We arrived shortly before 1pm, so we decided to try out the Barracks cafe. Without much expectation, as we had never heard of the eatery before, we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of dishes available. The interior is comtemporary with a gorgeous sandstone bar, which stragely complements the building steeped in 1800s architecture. The staff are friendly, professional and courteous, and the large open fireplace gives the feeling of warmth and hospitality. The meal was superb, with every morsel of the chilli-salted calamari a delight. My husband had the Atlantic salmon which is served with a confit of artichoke, and he, being a finicky eater, was left closed-mouthed and silently enjoying his meal. We had a wonderful lunch, topped off with a lovely bottle of red and cheese platter in front of the fire, who could ask for more? Maybe just some privacy....
