Befitting its home in the shadow of the refurbished Meat Market Craft Centre, Hotel Metropolitan is a carnivore's dream. The lunch menu bursts with beef, though vegetarians are also well catered for. Originally built in 1874, Hotel Metropolitan still boasts original timber floorboards, 22-foot high ceilings and wide, white cornices. It is a magic mix of fabulous food, superlative service and living history - a combination that has earned them accolades such as the 3AW DeBortoli pub of the year.

A treat
Is the Metropolitan Hotel a gastro pub? This label has dreadful connotations for Melbournians, especially given its association with a disease we don't wish to talk about at the dinner table. Either way, the Metropolitan Hotel offers very interesting dining, and is nothing like your average suburban pub. We left the safe haunts of Brunswick and headed over to North Melbourne to try a three course dinner at the Metropolitan Hotel. I was amazed at the quality and presentation of the food and the dining room ambience. Firstly we had a trio of warm olives, small fish cakes with ailoi, and fried haloumi with a capsicum relish. All bite sized- more like tapas than mezze- and all delicious. We both ordered the barramundi for mains, served with a tasty glaze, and pumpkin puree. I was a little hesitant about the barra, as it comes steamed, and I really prefer barra fried then baked, however, given the wonderful saucing, it was very good. We ordered two side dishes, some beautiful vibrant green vegies, and a tomato and goat cheese salad. There aren't many vegetarian options, the only pasta dish includes chicken, and the other vego offerings resemble salads. The other fish offering was the fried fish of the day ( Blue Grenadier) which is not so appealing. Steak lovers are well catered for. The desserts are to die for- someone in this kitchen has a passion for dessert. Chocolate mousse with toffee glaze , nut topping and a fine ice cream, and a panna cotta with a blood orange sorbet and other bits- I was in heaven by this stage and really could not take notice. The desserts are ample- unlike the twee offerings in most restaurants these days. The dining space is stunning and the service is friendly and non intrusive. I highly recommend this hotel.

Wonderful
What a lovely hotel and a magnificent space. From the lovely old bar to the really Grand dining Room, this was a lovely experience. The steak was mouth watering and the desert of chocolate fondue really tasted great. Our waiter was great and spent time to make sure we were well looked after. A great pub/restaurant, heartily recommended

very slow
i have had lunch here a couple of times and have been very dissapointed the service very very slow no one looks interested and not helpful, and for the price you pay for the food you'd think they provide bread! The food was good but i dont know if im prepared to waste half a day waiting for it.
