This heritage-listed hotel was established in 1906 and the outside retains its grand antique charm. The inside has been completely renovated, with timber floors and original architectural features paired with shades of terracotta and thoroughly modern furniture. The menu offers simple bistro fare, yet soars above the average pub grub. Hereford Gold eye fillet is served on truffled mash with wilted spinach, while a simple tuna steak is elevated by citrus, herbs and a watercress, green bean and orange salad. The wine list similarly exceeds expectations, including the full range of all-star French shampoos, more NZ sav blancs than you could chuck a kiwi at, and the most well-known SA shirazes on the market. The bar is smoke-free, so you can float into the rest of the venue after dinner on a waft of espresso and satisfaction, rather than on a gust of tar.
