Down the quiet, western end of Gouger Street, there's an eastern revolution happening, with a few excellent, fuss-free Asian restaurants deciding to open doors a short walk yet a world away from Chinatown's bustle. Among those earning a loyal following is Hotaru, one of Adelaide's best kept secrets, with the intent on keeping their find very quiet indeed. Simple in appearance, the restaurant is nevertheless warm and inviting, largely thanks to the owner/chef couple who give it a friendly, family-run atmosphere. The food is traditional and very authentic Japanese, but with only the highest quality and freshest ingredients (only South Australian blue fin tuna is used for the sashimi and sushi), it is elevated far above and beyond any of its peers in Adelaide. The teppanyaki dishes are standouts, as are the conical hand rolls filled with soft-shell crab and sushi rice.
