Genteel and a slice of what Melbourne might have been like in simpler times, tea and scones rule here still. And let's not forget the pinwheel sandwiches, lamingtons and vanilla slices. Etiquette, ladies, etiquette! Are you ready to indulge in the polite mannerisms of early last century? The Hopetoun Tea Rooms are for you. It's as though the ghosts of the members of the Victorian Ladies' Work Association, which originally opened the tea rooms in the 1800s, still remain. Once in the door, you are transported to eras gone by due to the vintage decor that still remains intact. Expect old favourites like pinwheel sandwiches, grilled ham, cheese and pineapple toasties and Welsh rarebit. But if it's the traditional lamingtons and vanilla slices you're after, get in early because they usually sell out before midday.

WOW - what a place!!!
My girlfriend - recommended that we see the Hopetoun Tea Rooms. I am a big fan of the old world era. I could not believe this place. From the outside - it is so inviting. The cake display is to die for. The people queued up waiting patiently at the door - said it all. It must be good. So I joined in and as I waited - the background music and the whole atmosphere transports you away from the real world. Was seated and selected from the menu - the Welsh Rarebit. It came out on to the table and it looked FANTASTIC - I knew I was here to stay and fall in love with the whole place. The taste and presentation of the meal - was something out of this world. Having finished the meal - decided that I could not leave without selecting a cake and having a coffee. Selected the Lime Tart and it was delivered with Fresh cream and presented with style. The coffee arrived and you could smell the aroma of the beans. All delivered in perfection amongst an amazing backdrop. Thank you and I will be back - with a team of people. I love this place. It certainly has changed from the reviews that have been posted here??

The Hopetoun is Back!
Ladies and Gentlemen - we are regulars to Melbourne CBD and must say that something has happened to the infamous Hopetoun Tea Rooms. Their overall look and feel of the 100 and something year old shop has been improved. We found the service to be quick, and the quality of the food was fantastic. It is under new ownership - after talking to the owner - and they look passionate about the place. The cake selection and cake display in the morning is to die for. All baked on-site with a chef - that has been trained by the Roux brothers. All of the food has been revamped and the menu remains the same... The owner also told me to watch this space... What a beautiful transition. For this that had a bad experience, in the past - well - give it another try now..

Pluses and minuses
I agree with 'teal4two' above; table service is poor. Eventually though, and just before sending up flares, she sidles up to your table without an acknowledgment, and takes you order! Bizarre!
But, you can't fault the ambiance, although it is rather crammed, and there is no privacy...still, it is a pretty little place in a beautiful arcade, and that is most of its charm.
The coffee was good, and the chocolate cupcake ('handmade' apparently) was superb...
They also do "high tea"; anybody been??

Canned cream!
It all started well with a lovely greeting, once seated a waitress came to our table, no verbal greeting or smile, we placed our order of English breakfast tea, scones with jam & cream plus toasted raisin bread. Again no verbal acknowledgment of our order, 10 minutes later two cups arrive with the scones (not fresh and oven baked) average strawberry jam and what looked like dairy whip from a can! Another 10 minuets and the tea and toast arrive. For such a beautiful setting and well presented displays of cakes and lovely teapots we were very disappointed, maybe because it was a Thursday! I'll give it another try on another day and hopefully it will be better.
