Hoang Hau

Hoang Hau, having relocated from Dickson to classy Kingston, is run by husband and wife team Simon and Ann Lam. The couple grew up in Vietnam, so the menu is mostly Vietnamese, but has interesting Chinese influences which the owners credit to family members who grew up in China. There's nowhere else in Canberra quite like it. Hoang Hau, meaning 'imperial queen', originally opened in Dickson about six years ago and was the couple's first restaurant.

Chef Simon has plenty of experience under his belt, after years of experience cooking at Asian restaurants in Sydney and Tang Dynasty in Canberra. He whips up dishes that are certain to excite Aussie palates, such as the house special - golden, crispy pigeon sprinkled with spiced salt. The decor isn't really anything to write home about, but Hoang Hau doesn't claim to be a place for fine dining - it's all about authentic food at a great price, with helpful service. Try the Vietnamese mini rolls for an entree, and the bo luc lac - authentic Vietnamese diced steak wok-fried with garlic butter.

The food is the drawcard
This restaurant was a real little surprise for me. I was just looking for something quick and tasty and I would say their mixed Asian cuisine is well above average. I had the vietnamese rolls (crispy, tasty and served with iceberg lettuce to roll them in) and chicken noodle soup. I was aiming for something very quick and was impressed with the chicken noodle soup. It was extremely tasty and came with all the little extras to add as you liked. Fresh chilli, beanshoots and vietnamese mint. The real winner for me was the flat vermicelli noodles in the soup, fresh made, not dried and you could tell! The only downer was that there was some (very loud) staff training going on right amongst the tables, which was quite distracting. Oh, and also Barbara Streisand in the background. But nothing that will stop me from returning.

Amazing food will keep you coming back again and again
This is such a fantastic little Vietnamese diner. I've eaten here a few times with friends and am yet to come across a dish that has not been great. Some of their selections (e.g. duck) on the specials board are truly delicious. A relaxed eatery, so no bells and whistles, but clean with decent service and yummy food!
