Himalayan Cafe

High in the glacial peaks of New Farm is a little bit of the most mysterious nation on earth. Suitably colourful, the interior of this rather small restaurant might remind you of a Nepalese teahouse were it not for the fact that there is a massive selection of vegetarian food on the menu, along with such dishes as a delicious, tender goat stew and a delicately flavoured prawn dish. Seating is available either at the tables and chairs on the pavement or on the cushions inside. Trying its best with the prayer flags and bunting, the Himalayan, while not completely authentic, is interesting for its use of Nepalese and Tibetan decoration and is a relaxing place to recharge.

best place in brisbane
i love to wow my friends when they visit from interstate and take them to dinner here but always request the back room. i took my parents here and my mum said it was the best meal she had. when i used to eat meat, sherpa chicken was my favourite meal. the ambience be it in the front room with the hustle and bustle and getting together with friends or the relaxed monk style music in the backroom.. you're guaranteed a unqiue dining experience at himalayan cafe! would definitely recommend it.

comfortable and warm atmosphere complemented by fantastic food!
This place fantastic. My partner and I went here for our anniversary and we were positively suprised by this little gem. The wait staff were vere friendly and attentive, without being too pushy. The restaurant was cosy and comfortable; the decor and relaxing music makes you forget that there is a busy bustling street outside! The food was amazing! We recieved our food quickly. Generous serving sizes and exciting flavours, and extremely tender meat that just melts in your mouth. The Himalayan bread and dipping sauce are fantastic, I could dine here every night!

Annapurna revisited!!
Having travelled to Nepal last year for an 18 day trek, we wanted to relive part of our journey. So we decided to find a Nepalese restaurant and found the Himalayan Cafe through this site. Can tell you that the Dahl Bat was very similar to the Dahl bat we ate in many of our stops along the way as were the Vege Momo's - another great memory of our trip.

Great atmosphere, Good food. Definately coming back again!!

subtlety is the spice of life
To those who say that there meals where bland... If you are looking for big, obvious flavours like the sugary western curries you get at most cheap indian restaurants then don't go to this restaurant...

Expect subtle flavours that aren't obvious at first but you will fall in love with...

We have been visiting this restaurant quite regularly, love the sherpa chicken and the vegetarian soups... atmosphere is great, yes it can be busy (as most popular restaurants are) and hence the service may drop a little as they try their hardest to serve everyone, but food this good is worth waiting for....

What a gem
If you didn't like this place because it was a little crammed or noisy then you have missed the experience. It is so busy because the food, atmosphere and staff are wonderful. Note also that if you thought the food was bland you can ask for medium mild or hot. The vegetarian tofu curries are to die for, the bread and dipping sauce is a must every time you go and I just recently tried the spicy ice cream: sweet and strange I like it. Go to the Himalayan laugh talk eat relax it is full of people who want to do the same.

Disappointing
I was surprised to see such positive reviews about the food. My husband and I had the most bland, flavourless food that we've ever eaten. It's a shame really because we liked the wait staff and the style the restaurant was decorated in.

Sadly, I can't recommend this place. :(

Very Pokey and Noisy
My friend and I had dinner at the Himalayan Cafe on a busy Friday night. We entered the very pokey entrance of the restaurant to find that it was very cramped and pokey inside. My friend had made a booking and we were both very unimpressed when we saw the waitress separating two tables to make our table. I think the couple that was already seated at the adjoining table were not impressed either and I don't blame them. So needless to say it felt like we were sitting with this other couple as you were sharing the same bench seat. We were also seated right next to the door which kept opening and shutting which was very distracting.

We both felt that the food was very overpriced for basic curries. Having said that, my prawn curry did taste very nice, however did not warrant the $20 price tag.

I don't think I could recommend this place to anyone. Maybe it might be a better place during the weeknights, but I think they should try not to fit so many diners in, it felt like we were in a sardine tin!

Great and Casual
Love this restaurant. Good price, if you go with a group, and friendly service. The food lives up to expectations and is very satisfying.

Good food and great set up
The Himalayan always guarantees a great night out. I love sitting in the back room which makes you feel like you've stepped into a himalayan guesthouse for dinner. The food is consistently good and cheap, love the himalayan and garlic breads - worth going just for them! I can't get past number 33 which is a chicken coconut based curry. The portions are a good size. It's a great place if you are looking for a great meal and unique setting. Love the Himalayan.

Fabulous and great value
This is one of my favourite restaurants. I've been to Nepal and its not exactly traditional Nepalese cuisine - but let me tell you - you wouldn't want it that way! I've had a different dish each time I've visited and never felt disappointed. Its the best feed under $20 that you'll get in Brisbane. Absolutely delicious.

My favourite restaurant in Brisbane
I go here every year for my birthday dinner, and I normally get the Sherpa Chicken - But since I've become a vegetarian it will be interesting going back and trying a lot more of that part of the menu! But always really beautiful food and awesome entrees.

One of my favourites
What can I say: Truly wonderful food. If you can get a chance to book in the back area of the restaurant, do so. The atmosphere there is enough on its own.
