Formerly the domain of strictly summer-only bars full of scantily-clad, sunburned, cocktail-swigging folk, there's now reason to venture to Manly in the deep, dark, cold winter months too: Hemingway's.
To describe this place as cosy would be a serious understatement, with chesterfield couches and the warm glow of vintage lamps and candle light - against a backdrop of portraits of the great man himself - giving it the feel of a cocoon that you want to curl up inside of and not leave till spring.
The cocktail list is superb and includes adult twists on childhood favourites like spiders, creaming soda, iced coffee and coola (everybody's favourite flavour of cordial). The food menu is similarly nostalgic, though dishes like "2 minute noodles" (described as noodles, poached chicken, kimchi, broth), and "pancakes" (pork belly, apple chutney, coleslaw) are nowhere near as childish as they seem. The chip degustation (with matching sauces) is a particularly tongue-in-cheek interpretation of an old favourite. Ironic, cool and smart - it's not exactly what we're used to from Manly, which is exactly why we'll lap it right up. Thank you very much Mr H.
