Set in the middle of probably the most concentrated stretch of Asian eateries in the inner suburbs, Happy Chef still manages to more than hold its own. It is not because of any designer decor (functional grey plastic is offset by the brightness of backlit photographs of the dishes), or the service (order at the counter and take a number), but Happy Chef consistently churns out familiar Chinese favourites for equally happy Newtown locals. The highlights are the soups and laksas, as testified by the number of people cheerfully slurping at the tables on any given night, but every Happy Chef regular has their personal favourite from the extensive menu.

RE: Happy Chef Challenge
I am also a big fan of Happy Chef, reasonably priced, very tasty and a fun family friendly atmosphere. My favourite is the honey chicken - an old favourite that brings back fond memories of Charlie Chan Chinese Restraunt I used to visit with my parents and my sister Penelope when we were kids.
My only gripe would have to be in relation to the happy chef challenge, I did order a Pepsi but was not greeted with the "choice of a new generation", which was a bit disappointing, but does not diminish my love for this fine establishment.

The Happy Chef Challenge
Last year I went to happy chef every Friday for lunch. I noticed that there were 52 menu items and there are 52 weeks in a year so I had a different meal every week. I loved every meal except number 11 and 32. I find the huge blocks of tofu disgusting. The won ton noodle soup is the best I've tasted in the world and Happy Chef himself saying "Choice of a new generation" every time I bought a Pepsi just made my dining experience.

Happy Chef 10/10
This place is fantastic. Worldwide, you know you're in for a treat when you approach a Chinese shop with Peking Duck, char sui and ribs hanging in the front window on display.
The food is excellent. Personally I find the service to be great, though the actual inside could use an update (or just grab takeaway and bring it home) but they obviously focus on the food.
The XO sauce the chef makes is excellent. In fact, all dishes are excellent. They do takeaway, and I always end up leaving with a kilo of char sui to eat at home.

Greatest menu
I have only been about 5 times, but every time I have a new dish that I claim to be my new favourite. There is so much to choose from and the servings are great - I always have stuff to take home with me. The pricing is so reasonable for what you get, and even though the place doesn’t look all that amazing, you don’t notice, as everything else is to perfection. I would recommend it to everyone who passes by that area.
