Nice addition!
I have been meaning to check out Ha-Lu for ages as I walk to work past it and it's just near home. I have also seen it being not very busy a fair bit, and wanted to support something new and apparently cool in the neighborhood. Have tried the take-away bento box which was very good, but a bento box all the same. Going there for a quick unplanned dinner with my partner on Fri night it was busy although not rammed, and a great dining experience, there is a little bit of fusion involved but generally it's a great Japanese dining experience, and not as costly as I thought it would be.
We had the duck breast w/ seeded mustard, the agadashi tofu, the steamed salmon parcel and another fish dish which was like lightly stir fried strips of a unidentified fish in a chilli and ginger type sauce, all of the food was top quality produce and prepared very well. the sa,mon was amazing, as was the other fish dish.
Service was very good, almost too polite but it's a Japanese restaurant after all! And they had Yebisu malt beer, so tops marks there as well.

Exciting Japanese tapas style
I've been meaning to check out Ha Lu for a while now, and last night was crunch time.
I was there with two sisters, one a little experimental with food, and the other a totally timid eater who hardly ever eats anything outside basic Aussie, reminiscent of tastes about 20 years ago, but she came along and was very impressed with trying new things. We shared the deep fried camembert and would have liked double the amount. Timid-eater's chicken nanban was moist and tasty and had a creamy tartare for dipping that she was keen to take home! I had beautiful agedashi tofu in a light broth which I would have liked more of to sauce the pieces with every bite. My other friend enjoyed the chilled duck for entr?e this was delicious! She also had the braised pork belly which was fragrant and moist. I had the sashimi of the day, some tender chunks of tuna, salmon and thin slices of snapper with dipping sauces - truly divine!
Timid eater also tried the Chocolate Parfait for dessert which we all nibbled at. Sweet, creamy and different with the chocolate rice crisps - yum!
Well done on design Ha Lu is a bright and airy space even though it's really quite an intimate restaurant. The wheelchair access is good, a short ramp with TGSI for vision impairment, inside is flat throughout and an accessible toilet is clean and roomy. The larger power chairs might have a bit of a tight fit, but should be okay.
I will definitely be back, given it's on my way home and there is still so much I want to try! I didn't even start on the sake list.
Thanks for a lovely meal.
