The restaurant's name is imitative of the owner's feelings at the date of opening - this venue just 'had to happen'. Which must have been spot on, as it has filled a niche in the North Sydney market for over 13 years, serving Californian/Mexican-styled fare to throngs of customers throughout that time.
Had to Happen serves what is not included in the Old El Paso take-home kit: nachos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, tortillas and the like. The house specialty is the very tempting (almost daring) all-you-can-eat fajitas, suitably accompanied by a crispy cool beer or a ripping fruit margarita in a salt-rimmed glass.
The decor is colourful and complementary, complete with cacti and sombreros. With tables inside or out, there is also bench seating if you want to get cosy. Keeping them coming back is the Had to Happen Regulars Club, which offers a birthday present at that special time of year, as well as the promise of every fifth main meal free. For non-members who are just tumbling in, very respectably priced party menus can provide for group bookings.
