simply the worst
I had a breakfast with a mate here and we couldn't finish it. It was fatty, luke warm, lacking flavour and parts weren't cooked well. The cafe has a nice outlook and is now surrounded by hot spots for eating & drinking. But it doesn't really compete with the neighbours - it just does the bare minimum as it always has. I was shocked to see shrivelled sausages on my plate which tasted of very little at all. The eggs were overcooked and the bread was toasted then reheated - tough and unenjoyable. The staff had a good sense of humour, but not funny enough to draw me back.

Always delicious.
Gus' has so many tasty options on it's menu that I have trouble choosing every time. It's great that they offer cheap but fantastic sandwhiches at dinner time because sometimes you want that option. There is always a good range of simple yet special dishes and the cakes are fantastic! I have have always had good experiences with the staff although often there is a bit of a wait because it's such a popular place. The breakfast menu looks great and I can't wait to try it.

Consistency in the brunch department!
We go to Gus' pretty regularly and I'd have to say the best thing is the consistency. You know what you are going to get, and that's a decent meal at a decent price with good service.

Bright Spark
Gus' Cafe is somewhat of a Canberra institution, situated within Canberra City and the thriving Bunda street.
A regular meeting place for the locals and visitors alike. Having more of a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere it is ideal for a casual feed or simply coffee and drinks. The food is generally of a high standard though the menu may be a little slim for the regular visitor to choose from.
The cafe often gets very busy during the evening and as such table service can suffer, but generally staff are well natured and jovial.
A great venue for the social coffee and cake.

Great options and friendly service
A group of friends and myself stopped at Gus's for breakfast while we were in Canberra after a local informed us that it is one of Canberra's longest running cafes. Now I can see why!
We're a difficult group to feed - I'm vegetarian, my friend is coeliac (can't have gluten), and one of my other friends is lactose intolerant. The waitress was very friendly and ran us through all the options for our dietary needs (there were several for each of us).
The food arrived quickly and was delicious. The coffee took a little longer to come out but was made beautifully. The long black was not bitter at all and the young man behind the counter was very nice. We were informed that the cafe would be closing for renovations. I can't wait to head back to Canberra in the future where I expect to enjoy the new and improved cafe even more!

Terrible food and no gluten free options
Some friends and I regularly breakfast before work, this time we tried Gus' Cafe. Upon ordering and after half of our meals had arrived they advised they do not have gluten-free bread (even after a prior phone assuring us they do). The bacon on one of the meals was black and burnt, the raisin toast was stale and the eggs Benedict was hardboiled. I then stood at the counter for five minutes waiting to pay. Having said that the waiter and waitress that served us were very friendly and helpful.
I have been to Gus' at dinner time and the food was fantastic, so I am really suprised the food was so bad today.

Oh the service...
It is a Canberra institution, but I always avoid this place due to the notoriously bad service! When the food does come it is rather good though... And it is a great spot for people watching!

slop in the city
A friend arranged to meet me here and we cringed the whole way through the meal. I don't know where they got the ideal of adding chunks of potato to omelettes, but it doesn't work. Seriously poor quality, with an imbalance of low-quality spices. I'd heard that chefs don't make their meals and this proved it to me. The whole plate was thrown together and held no appeal at all.

Good location, and a place to be seen..
I think part of this cafe's sucess is in its great location. More of a cultural, 'trendy' place to go to meet with friends than the place for good coffee (I don't think I have ever received mine at a temperature I'd call 'hot').
That aside, if you get one of their good waiters, you will be pleased, as they will be really friendly, funny and polite.

A new
Loved the breakfast. It was difficult to choose what to have as the menu has all of the basics, each with a special twist. Probably the best hot chocolate I have had in Canberra. I can't wait to eat there again.

Good food, bad service
Gus's has always been great for good food (albeit a bit overpriced) and a relaxed atmosphere, however their service is, and always has been, notoriously bad. It's worth the wait.

Simply the Best!
I am a tourist from France who happens to be a restaurant reviewer. My first dinner at Canberra was at Gus'. Meals are fantastic, the vibe is great and the service is extraordinarily friendly and cheeky with a touch of class!
