Named after a team of Nepalese, Indian and British soldiers renowned for their loyalty and courage, the Gurkhas chain of restaurants have become Melbourne institutions, beginning with the flagship eatery in Prahran in 1995. Since then, six Gurkhas eateries have brought classic Himalayan cuisine to urban Melbournians, including this Carlton hotspot. With warm red walls, traditional images, and a wood-panelled bar, Gurkhas Carlton is a nurturing spot that serves an interesting range of vegetarian, and endearingly titled "meatarian" dishes. These include pharsiko (butternut pumpkin sauteed in vegetable oil, ginger, garlic and fresh coriander), kukhura ma mula (chicken curry with white raddish), and myriad seafood, salad, rice and dessert delights.
