Named after a team of Nepalese, Indian and British soldiers renowned for their loyalty and courage, the Gurkhas chain of restaurants have become Melbourne institutions, beginning with this, the flagship Prahran eatery in 1995. Since then, five more Gurkhas eateries have brought classic Himalayan cuisine to urban Melburnians, with whom they remain a firm favourite city-wide. With warm red walls, traditional images on the walls, formal brasserie table settings and some more casual, low tables with cushion seating, Gurkhas is a comfortable spot that serves an authentically prepared, traditional range of vegetarian and meat dishes. These include kachila curry (spicy meatball curry cooked with aromatic herbs and spices), pharsi ko (butternut pumpkin sauteed in vegetable oil, ginger, garlic and fresh coriander), and myriad seafood, salad, rice and dessert delights.

Yum
Went to Gurkhas in Carlton last night with my friends and I really enjoyed it. The serive was friendly and we were seated away from the door when requested. The menu is very tempting with many choices to choose from. My friends ordered the simple banquet which though it was tasty, was a wee bit too small. They said the chilli chicken was the best out of them all. I ordered for myself and my sister the momo which was okay. But the chicken curry with cream (main) tasted fantastic! The eggplant & potatoes were also really good. We finished off with some flaky bread and equally scrumptious masala roti (mash potato bread). Would definitely return again in the future. Yum.
