Fremantle isn't exactly chockers with French restaurants, which makes Great Mellie an even more welcome addition to the port city. Lyon-born chef Frederic Verschoore and wife Letitia took over the High Street space in 2007, refreshing the room with a lick of paint and liberal doses of crisp white linen, and serving up a menu of contemporary French cuisine. You don't have to hear Frederic's accent to know you're in a French restaurant, with terrines and brulees appearing on the menu, but don't expect straight-laced Gallic fare. The French food is enlivened with fresh flavours and even an occasional Asian zing.
