Fantastic!
Grasshopper is definately the best restaurant i've been to this year!
Firstly, the food. I have been to this restaurant twice in the last two months and both times I have left so satisfied and content. The food is wonderful, last night I had the cheese platter (3 Pieces) which had some lovely cheddar and 2 wonderful other cheeses, one was almost a cross between camembert and blue cheese, it was fantastic! For the mains I had the three little pigs- The best pork dish I have EVER had, and also the lamb shank. The meat for the lamb shank fell off the bone it was so tender! All the mains cme with delicious sides that will have you always wanting more!
The service is wonderful.. How, in the middle of the city they have managed to find such fantastic customer service is beyond me. The wait staff come to your table for a chat, can recommend exactly what you are in the mood for. They are quick, happy and friendly (a rareity these days!)
The atmosphere i love.. Creating a quirky romantic feel they have the restaurant rather dark with candles, and while you are enjoying your delicious dinner you can gaze at the many different fondue pots that line the wall, sipping water from a jam jar!
But before or after dinner, you have to go to the bar downstairs.. The cocktails are little slice of heaven... I would highly recommend the numbers 3, 8 and 9. All wonderfully unique with a beautiful flavour make this the ultimate place to go for an after work drink, catch up or dinner.
Grasshopper is a hidden oasis in the busy city, I would highly recommend you go there for a meal or at very least a cocktail!

Noisy but nice
This place is better known as a quirky little underground bar, but upstairs is a very french-style bistro. It's darkish with bentwood chairs and wooden tables, lampshades and wallpaper.
Food choices are limited but interesting. Entrees were oysters, a terrine of the day, 'scotch egg'. Mains were Steak Dianne, Hapukah with white wine, Beef Cheeks with pearl barley in an orange sauce, lamb rump, rabbit pie. Sorry I cannot remember the dessert, as we were too full to eat any, but definitely a cheese plate! Wine list is am equal mix of European and Australian.
I started with the terrine of the day, a fromage de tete, ie a pork pate made with the meat parts of the pig's head. It was in a lighty flavoured aspic jelly with parsley, very reminiscent of the french jambon persillee. It came with a warm potato salad through which quite a lot of seeded mustard had been stirred, and a salad of mesclun and rocket. A good sized and tasty entree for about $14.00.
For mains I had the Beef Cheeks, beautifully cooked but I found the orange sauce a little overpowering. There was also a lot of seeded mustard stirred through the pearl barley. Both overpowered the beef cheeks, so whilst they were unctuous and tender, the main flavour was orange and mustard. My companion had the Rabbit pie with borlotti beans (daily special). The pie itself was absoutely delightful, pastry crisp and the filling tasty and tender. It came accompanied by 3 slices of rabbit and morcilla wrapped in prosciutto. She pronounced it the best rabbit she had ever had. We also had the brussels sprouts with pancetta and they were beautifully cooked also. I thnk the mains were about $25-$30.00.
We'd had cocktails from the bar downstairs when we arrived, but took them up as there were no seats on a Thursday night at 6.05pm! Kitchen doesn't open until 6.30 so although we could sit down upstairs we couldn't see a menu until the kitchen was open. The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable about the wine, and very pleasant as well. The noise from the bar percolates up the stairwell, which is open to the restaurant, plus an extremely loud hen's party didn't help - the wooden floors echoed the sounds and many other patrons looked annoyed at the screams coming from their corner. Not sure what they can do about the noise, but at least on a Thursday night the bar downstairs had emptied and quieted by 9pm.
Grasshopper is a nice place, interesting and quirky, if a bit noisy. At the moment I'd say it was a place where people went to drink and then eat, rather than make a pilgrimage for the food alone.
