Grapeseed

The boys from CBD favourite Punch Lane have spread their culinary love out to the suburbs, setting up companion diner Grapeseed in Armadale. Grapeseed is a real local's local, offering casual breakfasts and lunches, but borrowing a page from Punch Lane by shifting up a gear at dinner. Open in several evenings a week, Grapeseed's little kitchen serves a menu of simple, produce-focused cuisine. The idea is to offer a dining experience fine enough to match this posh, tree-lined suburb, yet casual enough for the locals to pop down for dinner on a whim. Once settled into this industrial-feel space (which is softened by feminine colours and fabrics) diners can tackle such dishes as rigatoni with braised lamb; roast salmon with spiced Asian salad; or a simple steak.

Not what you would expect...
This place has excellent food. I've been a number of times and the food is great. Coffee is also very good.

However, this is let down by woeful service. I went in on Saturday morning. To be fair, it was pretty busy. But I stood there for 5 minutes without even being acknowledged.

So, I left and went to a place down the road. The food isn't as good - but I can sit down straight away and people know how to say hi.

The time before that, it took about 20 minutes just to order.
