Despite its less-than-picturesque location (on the highway, opposite the railway station), Gran Sasso occupies an elegant space, perhaps channeling a little of the breathtaking beauty of its namesake. The name is taken from Gran Sasso National Park in Italy, and the walls are hung with photographs of some of the park's iconic vistas. The rest of the decor is simple and striking, with big bright windows, starched linen and luxurious beige suede lounges.
The menu leans toward rustic Italian fare, with such standout dishes as eggplant cannelloni and tomato and olive ragout, served with eggplant fritters and celery-oil-drizzled mousse. If you can bypass the house-made pasta, the kitchen is most famous for its brodetto di pesce - a casserole of shellfish in mild serrano chilli, with jacket garlic and plum tomato sauce. Gelati are a house specialty, with the down-to-earth dessert menu featuring such highlights as navel orange gelato with crepe hats, cream and berries, served in a chocolate soup and drizzled with orange caramel sauce.
