Goshen

Goshen is steadily upping its reputation as a mighty fine Korean food venue. The MSG-free menu has been meticulously put together with clear explanations of some of Korea's best-loved dishes. While there are a number of favourite meals among the waiters, the thin beef slices marinated in homemade spicy chilli powder will probably get a plug. As they should - they're delicious. Also worth a try is the bean paste stew with potato, pipis and tofu in a mushroom hot pot.

Atmosphere good, food so so
i really liked the atmosphere of this restaurant. It was nice and good to go with friends.

The food was really not korean. I could have cooked better.

I've read reviews in the age. I think they should get new reviewers!!

It would be nice to get some who knows about food to review restaurants

Flavoursome contemporary Korean cuisine
I've been here twice now and each time it gets better. The menu is full of choices to accomodate for a variety of tastes, and also very reasonably priced. I found the food to be full of flavour (a lot of spices but also perhaps due to a lot of oil) and somewhat different to your traditional Asian cuisine. I tried the seafood hotpot which was served mixed with rice in the pot... it was superb! My friend tried the beef hot pot which was good although the quality of beef not the best. The dumplings were delicious and the pancake filling. The service is getting better, most waitresses speaking full English and quite attentive. An added bonus is it's BYO wine, which makes it a pretty cheap night out.
The decor is lovely and I would highly recommend this restaurant for all occasions.

Love it!
I'm not qualified on Korean food to comment on its authenticity, but the flavours, textures and presentation of food at this restaurant are great. Vegetarians and vegans are understood and well catered for with a full page dedicated menu. Service is spot on.

The over-rated star...
Age Epiculture have reviewed it. So has the Good Food Guide and Cheap eats, also from Age publications. Others, such as Miettas and the author above have also reviewed it. I bet not a single one of them have had good Korean food, or even know what traditional Korean food is like (although I don't like that traditional vegie stuff). The ignorance that revolves these reviews amazes me.

The traditional Korean feast is a huge 11+ course banquet that revolves around vegetables. Only 1 - 2 meat based dishes would be found in a standard (han-jung-shik not available in Australia), usually a mildly marinated soupy version of beef bul go gi, and a lightly dusted pan fried fish/eel. Korean food is mostly vegetarian. The image that it's carnivorous was inspired by westerners, because westerners are generally big meat eaters, and the only Korean restaurants that could cater to, and survive in, the western world was the typical Korean BBQ restaurants... in order to serve meat to a meat-eating clientele.

What has all of this got to do with Go-Shen? Not much, except for the fact that it proves that every single "professional" reviewer who has reviewed this place have NO IDEA what they're talking about.

The food here is pretty terrible. The presentation of the food is pretty average, or a bit below average. It seems that the restaurateurs at this place are (wrongly) convinced that the plates and cutlery makes the presentation of food, rather than the food itself. But more importantly, it's the taste that's the problem.

Signature side dishes like Kimchi have been bastardized beyond recognition... and if it tasted better than the original (such as the red "kut ju ri" variant that can be eaten at most "kal gook soo" restaurants in Seoul), I wouldn't mention it in this manner. However, this Kimchi tastes terrible. It seems that after it has been made, it has been washed in water or vinegar, and then left out in a heated environment for too long. The cabbage is too soft, and the spices are missing, gone.

The rest of the food on the whole is very bland and tasteless, and yet it's curiously *too* sweet. The flavour of the food can't be felt, for the lack of a better word.

Service at this place is pretty good, considering how understaffed the floor is. Of course, the service is still very lacking because it's being run by 1 waitress per floor (there's 2 floors in the restaurant). The owner should really hire 2 per floor to cater for the Smith Street crowd on a fri/sat night.

The atmosphere is one thing which is pretty much perfect for where it is. I am not into the hippy/grunge Fitzroy culture, so couldn't give it a higher score based on personal tastes. However, it's perfect for the location and fits in quite nicely with the local culture.
