Open since 1973, this Chinese and Malaysian eatery wears its age well, with both levels of the restaurant simply decorated and bedecked with authentic accoutrements in traditional shades of red and gold. Proclaiming to be the first Malaysian restaurant in Melbourne, Golden Orchid prides itself on its range of satays and Malaysian curries. The Chinese dishes are listed separately for those who might prefer the Mongolian pork to the nasi goreng, however the Malaysian chilli prawns are a much-recommended signature dish.

The best in Chinatown!
My friend took us there as they had been going there since the '80s and we were a bit sceptical as it all seemed very 'old school'... then after the entree alone we swore to make Golden Orchids a regular affair! Delicious food and a great atmosphere especially if you sit upstairs. I am vegetarian and find the selection great and always lots of nice crisp vegies and yummy sauces. The staff always remember us and are very friendly, albeit straight up. I love it! PS try the beancurd, tomato & mushroom soup - it leaves me speechless everytime.

The best restaurant
Every time my family and I visit Melbourne it's always a tradition to go to Golden Orchids. My parents started eating there not long after it opened and now he takes us, and over the years we've told friends and family and they've gone and loved it. Whenever we go to Melbourne, going to Golden Orchids is a highlight. The food is wonderful - most times we order the beef satays, Singapore fried noodles and chicken cutlets and the service is good and the boss is always happy to see us come in. Golden Orchids is the best restaurant!

Overpriced, underspiced
Went for lunch and had the beef curry with rice. Not at all an authentic Malaysian curry as far as I'm concerned. The beef was tenderised and weirdly slimy. The curry sauce was greasy and bland. Also the rice bowl I got was dirty, but service was so slow I couldn't be bothered sending it back.
