Fans of North Bondi Italian Food (NBIF) in Sydney will get a strong, and very welcome, sense of deje vu looking at the menu here. Guiseppe Arnaldo & Sons (named as a tribute to the fathers of owners Robert Marchetti and Maurice Terzini) brings the much-loved NBIF south of the border, extending the concept and giving it a measure of Melbourne sophistication. Designers Lazzarini Pickering have decked out the Southbank space in a hypnotic geometric design that reflects the stark lines of the exterior of the Crown complex.
The menu is NBIF on steroids, with more than 80 dishes on offer. Marchetti's signature favourites are replicated here, such as calamari with zucchini and mint; or a crab arrabbiata, baked in a paper bag - though if it's anything like NBIF, you'll have to dine early to get your paws on this one. These sit alongside creations from Icebergs (Terzini and Marchetti's other big-name venture), Marchetti's own salumi and dishes that have been crafted specifically for the chef's Melburnian fans. Almost everything can be shared, so committed diners can browse through a fair portion of the menu in one sitting.

Simple, beautiful food
My wife and I popped in here prior to a show at the Arts Centre. I have been several times before and thought highly of the place already and this visit confirmed my earlier thoughts.
We both had pasta dishes and there were fantasic, in particulal my bucatini with red wine, squid, pancetta and chilli was beautiful - great marriage of flavours with expertly cooked pasta. My wife had the fettucini arrabiata which was similarly delicious. Service was excellent although it was not particularly busy.
As I've said I've visited here quite a few times and not had any problems - would recommend to others no problem.

Delish!
wow...just read previous diners comments and really surprised at how different my experience was.
Food, simple but incredibly delicious. Pea & mint salad to die for and complimented a shared plate of pork sausages & scallops perfectly.
Service fantastic and the place was a buzz with happy customers.
Maybe dinner time is crazy, especially with the no-reservation policy. I'd go back in a flash for lunch....yum-yum!

Awful
We got in at 6:45pm on a Saturday and were told it would be an hour and a half wait. Two hours and fifteen minutes later we were shown to our table which essentially was the marble counter behind the bar which had been set up as a "table". By the time our mains arrived it was 10pm! The food wasn't terrible and considering how bad the restaurant was running the service was acceptable.
Will never EVER EVER eat there again. It was a complete and utter waste of time.

Not all it's cracked up to be
Having listened to the hype, we were really looking forward to dining here but have to say we were disappointed and won't be going back. The decor is very warm and inviting but the staff were so bland. They wear these white jackets which I assume it to give them a butcher look (judging by the cured meat hanging around) but they look like they belong in a chemist instead. The clinical attire only accentuated the lack of warmth in the service. Now for the food. I ordered the school of prawns dusted in rosemary and was a little surprised when a basket of tiny prawns with their heads and legs still on arrived. Not sure where the dusting of rosemary was either. Looked and tasted to me like they'd all just been tossed in the deep fryer and plonked into a basket. So awful to eat - not too mention the time spent trying to get the legs out from between my teeth for the rest of the night. We also ordered the Spaghetti arrabbiata - crab, tomato, chilli baked in a paper bag and though it was nice, it was nothing special. The bag it was served in was also so big it became rather challenging just to get inside it and eat. We didn't bother staying for dessert.

Good experience
My experience on two different occasions has been good. From front of house to back of house staff all were hospitable. It gave me a great feng shui feeling.

Unhappy customer
A very disapointing experience at this restaurant. The service was terrible, the food was ok, but very small serves for the price you pay. The quality of the food was not that great, and we had only just finished our meals when the waiter asked us if we'd like the bill. We all still had full glasses of wine to finish. Expect to pay about $180.00 for lunch for 3 people with a bottle of wine, and still feel hungry! I will not be recommending this restaurant to my friends, and I certantly will not be returning.

Teething
We waited nearly 2 1/2 hours for a table. A group of six we ordered 13 dishes to share as we have done numerous times at NBIF, however, the kitchen sent out all of the food in 2 services in no particualr order it seemed. The service was very lack lustre and the maitre'd seemed to be completely unaware of the mayhem in the restaurant and bar. I hope these guys are just teething and will reach the standard set for them by NBIF... soon.
