Gills Diner's simple, rustic outlay is complemented by wholesome wooden furniture and a high ceiling, which adds to the general feeling of openness. The menu is part French bistro and part regional Italian, with a dabble in Lebanese cuisine.
The Euro-Mediterranean menu champions the locavore, with smaller producers from Victoria and Tasmania supplying the lion's share of the produce. The wine list is also food-mile friendly, with local boutique breweries featuring. The now-famous cotechino sausage is made fresh on the premises, and there's a lovely almond-infused clafoutis for dessert.

Winter Warmer
I am so surprised to read that Gills Diner is considered over-rated by so many restaurant goers! We went to Gills Diner for a Friday night pre-theatre dinner and it was FANTASTIC!
The ma?tre d' was able to accommodate our booking at very short notice and from the moment we entered this restaurant we received first class and attentive service. Our waitress did a diligent job of explaining the menu items, suggesting a matching white wine and serving the home-made bread and butter from the attached bakery. Gills Diner was extremely busy but we did not feel hassled or pushed to have our table back.
While the menu is very select, the choices on offer make it very difficult to decide. All the dishes were tuned to the warm, winter, comfort food you crave at this time of the year. I went for the classic eye fillet and it was cooked to perfection (a huge compliant to the chef as 9 time out of 10 I will send my steak back). The other members at my table chose the duck with baked cauliflower and kid ragu. No complaints from our party at all!
I can t wait to return to Gills Diner in the hope that the service and quality food is consistent. This restaurant presents a welcoming and relaxed dining experience despite its quirky warehouse environment. I eagerly await the next opportunity to visit!

Yum...
Everytime I've been to Gill's it has been fab! Staff are attentive, room is welcoming & informal...music is great... Vinyl an inspiring touch. Then onto the food... yum, yum, yum, yum... yum!!! Breads are amazing, as is the coffee... well delivered. I feel it is a fantastic concept put into action & somewhere I plan to return to again & again ;) All and all... Fab place that everyone involved in should be proud of! Also love the Victorian winelist, some tasty numbers there... would love some Alsatian rieslings or some Viognier though?!?!? :)

Very disappointed
I would not recommend Gills Diner at all! I had made a booking a week prior, was greeted at the door yet but left standing there for 10 minutes with no communication. I had to ask what was going on and was told our table was getting cleared. Continued to wait at the door and was then moved to the back area. Another 20mins of waiting until we were finally seated. I have never experienced such rude service, and the food was very average. And then to top it off we were overcharged by $40 for our order. We expressed our anger to the manager yet the only change was the miscalculation, no other compensation for such a crap night. Do not eat here!

Not that cheap and food was definitely overrated.
It was a lot more expensive than we thought it would be. Does not cater for vegetarians, only having one option which was zucchini flowers (just the tops, no actual zucchini vegetable was involved) and a small bowl of green beans, which I could have boiled at home and put peeper on myself (even the potatoes were cooked in duck fat). They have a really good selection of wine, but it was too far out of the average price range to enjoy. The staff were nice and polite, but looked like they were too busy prepping for the later crowd to pay attention to the current customers.

Overrated
We were there as part of a large group for a bday dinner. We had the banquet that night, the food was somewhat ordinary for what we were paying. Our glasses were empty majority of the time and they did not serve enough bread for the entrees. The bread that was served was virtually stale. The portions of the fish for main was small and the lamb chops was fatty. Overall the service was poor. Not only that, but I had made the effort to organise a bday cake for the bday girl from a well known and established cake store. Only to find out at arrival that we were not allowed to consume the cake on the premise, we were told we can only have the cake outside of the restaurant. This is supposedly because the cake was not prepared on the premise and it was for occupational health and safety reasons. We dine out regularly and have never heard of a no cake policy. The justification behind this policy is poor and offensive.
The only positive part of the dinner was that it was a nice atmosphere. We would not recommend Gill's Diner to anyone and will not dine there again.

Really good
Went there as part of a big group, but the service still managed to be smooth, considering how hard it must of been to manage a rowdy group like ourselves. Everything we ordered was incredibly delicious, perhaps bar one (the marinara- I think). We all had a difficult time trying to decide what to order, as it all sounded great. Dessert was a nice finish- we ordered churros which came with the customary chocolate sauce, which was spiked with a bit of orange flavour- really nice addition. Definitely want to go back and try everything on the menu! Great fitout too.

Yum
We had already been to the bakery for breakfast and read the dinner menu and decided we would definitely return. We lunched at Vue De Monde to excess then roamed the city for hours and hey presto we wound up at Gill's Diner for a little dinner (still full from lunch). The staff recognised us from breakfast and were so friendly and knowledgable. We ate two dishes recommended to us: the gnocchi with ragu and the squid ink tortellini with crab and leek, both were stunning. Warning: they have one of those menus that you would happily eat every dish on it! I would eat here every week if we lived in Melbourne. The room is fantastic and we loved the old records being played on the turntable behind the bar.
