Regarded by many as the home to Melbourne's best gelato, the atmosphere at this gelataria and pasticceria is constantly buzzing. The 10 outside tables are invariably filled and several lines of people often run three deep at the counter, ensuring the friendly staff are kept scooping at a hectic pace. Owner Sam Scullino makes the gelato fresh on the premises daily, keeping a family tradition alive - his brother continues in Italy. This history is reflected in the seductive texture of all 24 options; nothing is too sweet and the vital flavours of the ingredients are able to shine through. The gelati alla crema (made from a base of milk, egg yolk and sugar) highlights include zuppa inglese, Cointreau, baci and hazelnut. The gelati alla frutta (made with fresh fruit and sugar syrup) standouts include raspberry, lemon and - when in season - the wonderfully rich blood orange. In the unlikely event you make it past the gelato there is also a dizzying array of delicious Italian biscuits and cakes to choose from. There is also equally good homemade pasta (gnocchi, lasagne) and coffee.
