Few Melbourne wine lists can rival France-Soir's. Owner and sommelier Jean-Paul Prunetti has more than 1500 different European and Australian wines on offer. Then there's the food, which is about as French as you can get. Garlic escargot, salmon gravlax, bifstek, pommes frites and creme brulee - all par excellence. Service is also excellent, considering the difficulties presented by the long, narrow room.

Not as expected
We had expected a wait for our table, we had expected it to be busy however the food was unremarkable. The snapper was cooked without any preparation and served with simple fries - for over $35 it was disappointing to receive something we do at home regularly. The pork cut of the day was a better dish with a flavoursome sauce but unfortunately it did not make the overall experience live up to our expectations.
As mentioned previously the restuarant was full, busy and noisy which created its own 'see and be seen' atmosphere on this Saturday night. Overall nice meal but not outstanding.

timely & tasty
On the way to a St Kilda road meeting, we decided to have lunch right on 12.00. We luckily managed to park outside the door as the rain was belting down. As we were the 1st in, we hade the waiters undivided attention & requested a single course with a glass of wine & the need to be out in 40mins. The waiter quickly identified what options wouldnt meet the timeline & we quickly decided on rabbit casserole for me & caesar salad (i know i know!)for her. Wine & bread was quickly served & we relaxed, watching the rain tumble down. The food was delivered quickly & i was rewarded with a lovely portion of rabbit & cabbage in a light jus & she received her std CS. A bowl of complimentary chips were delivered as an accompaniment. The food was first rate & supported by attentive service (other patrons were arriving as we ate). The bill was promptly delivered & payment processed, allowing me to walk into the meeting right on time, while she went shopping in Chapel St - but outcome is a whole other story.

Lived up to expectations
Heard lots of good reports about France-Soir and I'm pleased (and relieved) to say that it did not disappoint. Food was just delicious - we had entree, main and dessert. Could not fault a thing(and I'm extremely fussy). Lively atmosphere, but nice clientele and service was efficient without being intrusive. We are looking forward to our next visit.

J'adore France-Soir!
I spent a good deal of time in France in 2006/2007 and was feeling 'homesick' so I wanted a really authentic French experience; I wasn't disappointed! The atmosphere of this place was amazing; I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I was back! The food was wonderful; I ordered the moules to start and the fillet for mains. Superb! French chefs must love the amazing produce they can get in Australia, because I craved a good steak when I was over there, and it just doesn't exist. I will definitely go back. My new favourite restaurant in Melbourne

A well rounded evening
As a customer of 22-years, I can comment with experience that this place just keeps getting better. It would appear that the chef has had a new lease on life and (in addition to the extensive menu) is putting a great deal of effort into creating interesting and somewhat delicious specials. this place has not missed a beat. Fun staff, great atmosphere and an extra-ordinary wine list wtih something for everyone!

Can't wait to go back again!
Very content and 5 star food. Worth trying out all the entrees, especially the escargot and the scallops. Could have easily had a full meal just from their bread - it's baked fresh and have not found anything to match it. There was also an amazing list of specials for entree, mains and dessert so that you could try a little something different in each visit. Friendly staff that gave us just the right amount of attention throughout the experience. As usual, the bistro-style setting makes you feel very warm and secluded in your own world; just the place to chat and have fabulous food with friends. Top meal every time we've dined here and very reasonably priced compared to the other fine dining try-hards.

Not worth the big fuss
Disapointing. Second time I had lunch and steak frites special is still very average. The meat is mediocre. Long wait between dishes even though not too busy. Waiter tries to sell you as much wine as possible. France Soir is about being seen, but it is not a quality restaurant. The selection of wine is impressive on the list, but three of the choices were "no longer" available. What is the point of having such a wine list if the wine is not in the cellar? Overall disapointing and not worth it.

Too rushed
A special dinner for a special celebration so we were looking for a relaxed and delicious evening, but we felt like we were being pushed out the door. My medium steak came out medium rare, the pomme frittes were overcooked and all courses came out far too fast. That said, the food was delicious and the atmosphere is great. Left feeling disappointed and that we would have had a better experience if we'd gone somewhere else.

sometimes noisy, crowded, all that's missing is the haze of tobacco to think you're in paris.
service in the great gallic tradition - with just a hint of 'taking the p...' with a sense of 'umour.
the food - tres bon.
A cognac and a coffee after a show - best place in town.
